Look into classes at your local Petsmart. They had "Puppy Preschool" when we were training my dog and the expert advise really helped. If you don't have a Petsmart, I'd still ask a local pet store, or the person you got your puppy from, what they recommend.

It just takes time, patients and love. 9 weeks is way too young to expect any kind of visible results the way you treat him now directly affects the way he treats you latter. This goes double for Pit Bulls I have two pits and if you show them love and respect they will do the same. People are always surprised at how well trained they are although my male (my females year and a half old pup ) can be hardheaded at times. I'm not sure if he is just too hyper or if its because my wife spoiled him as a puppy. They both sit, lay, rollover, stay, and fetch. while teaching them I never rewarded them with treats only petting and scratching . I do give them treats but not as rewards. My dogs are protective and loyal. My female(named Baby) was my mother-in-law's personal body guard when she was home alone. Never leaving her side when she was out in the yard and obeyed every command the first time she was told. She was her faithful companion till the day my mother-in-law died and you can tell she still misses her. I Hope your Pit will bring you as much joy.

9 weeks is a bit young. But at about 4-5 months take obedience class (the group class). Not only do they teach the tools you need to train your dog, but your dog will be socialized with other dogs & people. This does wonders for their future! There's nothing worse than having a dog that has social issues! '
Most city Park & Recreations districts offer such classes.
Good Luck!

I have a 7 year old colby pitt and everybody tells me she is the most well trained dog they ever saw. I never gave her treats for doing things as a pup just affection, she loved it. Use words and hand signals everytime u do a command. Whatever you do DON'T teach your dog speak, then they do it all the time (previous dog) Show it what you want by assiting ie..lay down. sit. Fetch come pretty natural just make sure you are the one in charge all the time. Be domanint, not mean. Multiple sylablles work better than singal, ie sit down w/ signal, I used Different word than traditional like "park it" and "gimmie some" instead of shake"
P.S. Right on to Phil S

I suggest you get some professional training for the dog...however I do NOT suggest sending just the dog to a training class..you need to go to one where the owners go as well with a group of others with their dogs. Too many times people send their dogs away to be "trained" and the dogs come back not obeying any of the commands their owners give them because they think they only have to obey the trainers at the training school..not the owner since they did none of the training.
Also, a group class will help your dog socialize with other dogs and he will learn to concentrate even when other dogs are around.

Aw, baby pitbull. I have had two over the years. Pitbulls are very trainable, very smart dogs, and their main desire in life is to please their owner, that is why it is so easy to train them to fight/kill. Ignore the idiot who told you to slap the .... out of them. So wrong. Just be firm, look them in the eyes and calmly ask them to sit, if they dont, gently push their bum down and say sit again. keep doing this and reward them when they do it right. One thing I did with my pups from the time they were little was always say "nice, nice" in a soft voice when they would tend to get a little rough. That helped them to understand that they had to calm down. The reason being that they do have the potential to be powerful and forget themselves. They can do damage without even trying. You do have to make sure they are trained. They are wonderful dogs and are extremely loyal and loving. Good luck with your sweetie.

Ever been to county animal control and seen all the pitbulls that people got, couldn't handle, and gave away to be euthanized?
The question we should all be asking is, How can we get people to find some other way to deal with their insecurity than to obtain dogs that were bred to be vicious?

Aww I bet your pups a cutie!
I'd suggest going to a pet store..(petco,petsmart,noahsark) Whatever you have in your area and buy a training booklet. They have easy instructions and are cheap too. Good luck!

American Pit Bulls are very, very smart and eager to please there master. This I found will be a blessing and a curse while you are training your puppy. They take very quickly to one or two work commands. Just be diligent and repetitive and your puppy will amaze you, by learning very quickly. You will probably notice that a Pit Bull watches everything, all the time, and by watching I mean Concentrates and learns from it. Our pit bull even taught him self how to unlock our dead bolt, simply by noticing that we turned it. The funniest thing that my Pit learned was to pick up his own toys, it's awesome. He started by watching me pick them up and put them in a basket in the evening, then he started helping me, and now before bed, I tell him "Snickers, put your toys away, its bed time" he picks em up, marches up the stairs and goes to bed. By, the way I have to warn you, they love to give lots of kisses(licks) and they are Huge Bed Hogs!!!!!

OK I RUN A NON PROFIT RESCUE FOR PIT BULLS AND ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I DO WITH MY PUPS IS TEACH THEM ABOUT THE SPRAY BOTTLE. I FILL A SPRAY BOTTLE WITH 1/3 VIAGAR OR REG. LISTERINE AND 2/3 WATER. WHENEVER THE ANIMAL DISOBEYS ME OR ANY OTHER HUMAN IN MY HOME THEY GET SPRAYED. THE POINT IS USUALLY MADE WITH IN A WEEK AND THE ANIMAL MOVES ON TO A NEW VICE.
1ST STEP
"LOOK"AND "COME": TO TEACH LOOK TAKE A SMALL PEICE OF A SOFT TREAT(I LIKE USING VELVEETA) AND PUT IT IN YOUR FIGERS BETWEEN YOUR EYES AND SAY "LOOK". ONLY GIVE THE TREAT TO THE ANIMAL WHEN IT ACTUALLY MAKES EYE CONTACT WITH YOU.(THE SAME APPLIES WITH COME, WHEN THE ANIMAL COMES TO YOU DURING A TRAINING SESSION AND AFTER BEING ORDERED TO COME GIVE IT A TREAT)
STEP 2
SIT: TO TEACH SIT THE DOG SHOULD ALREADY BE RESPONSIVE TO "LOOK", "COME" AND OR TREATS. WITH THE ANIMAL IN FRONT OF YOU TAKE THE TREAT AND PLACE IT AROUND THE ANIMALS NOSE. SLOWLY MOVE THE TREAT BACK OVER THEIR HEAD AFTER SAYING "SIT". THE DOG IN MOST CASES WILL AUTOMATICALLY SIT, IN SOME CASES YOU NEED TO PUSH THEIR REAR DOWN.
STEP 3
"LAY": FROM SITTING POSITION TAKE THE TREAT AND LOWER IT TO THE GROUND MAKING THE DOG SCOOT TO LAY DOWN. SOME HELP MAY BE NEEDED FOR THE FIRST FEW TIMES.
IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA TO TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO PETSMART FOR A TRAINING SESSION AND FOR SOCIALIZATION. PIT BULLS ARE DOGS THAT CAN BE EXCELLENT FAMILY PETS WHEN TRAINED AND PROPERLY SOCIALIZED WITH BOTH HUMANS AND ANIMALS. I MYSELF KEEP 10 IN MY HOME AND HAVE 2 AUTISTIC KIDS. PITS ARE NOT GOOD GUARD DOGS BUT ARE VERY INTIMIDATING WHICH HELPS PREVENT PROBLEMS. THESE DOGS ARE IN DANGER OF BEING OUTLAWED IN ALOT OF PLACES SO AS A OWNER BE RESPONSIBLE AND JOIN A PIT BULL CLUB IN YOUR AREA. REALIZE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THEY PASSED A LAW IN DENVER THAT ALLOWED THE CITY TO COME IN AND MURDER OVER 300 FAMILY PETS!!!
PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE OWNER AND LOVE THIS ANIMAL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. MAKE HIM/HER AN EXAMPLE ON WHY WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP THESE DOGS. IF YOU CAN NOT AFFORD GOOD TRAINING THEN TAKE THE ANIMAL TO PETSMART AND PRACTICE SOCIAL SKILLS AFTER YOU HAVE MASTERED AT LEAST 2 COMMANDS. UNTIL THAT TIME WHEN YOU DO TAKE THE ANIMAL OUT PUT IT INTO A SHOPPING CART WHILE YOU WALK AROUND THE STORE, THIS WILL HELP THE DOG GET USED TO SMELLS AND SOUNDS THAT COME WITH BEING OUT IN PUBLIC.
