the general rule is one hour in advance for domestic flights, two hours for international flights. however, where you live and what airport you are flying from also will affect how early you should be there.
i live in the los angeles area, and if i was flying out of lax, i would try to be there two hours early because security lines can be very long. but if i was flying out of the long beach airport, which is much smaller, i would only need to arrive 30 minutes early because there are almost no lines there.
another consideration is how far of a trip from home to airport, and whether you're driving yourself or being dropped off. you should plan an extra 30-45 minutes if you are leaving your car at the airport long term parking lot. shuttles are notoriously slow and usually run late. if someone is dropping you off, or you're taking public transportation, then you should be able to get there quicker. also plan for the amount of traffic that might be on the road as well. i'm sure at 4:30 in the morning, there won't be much traffic, so that shouldn't be an issue, but that would also depend on where you live (there's always traffic here in la, even at 4:30 am!).
all that said, i would say 4:45 is probably a safe time to arrive.

That early in the morning, the airport will be close to dead. The first flights have the highest no show factors, most people will book that flight, but dont bother showing up. Ticket counters do not open until 4am-5am depending on the city. An hour is plenty of time to be checked in, through security and to your gate. Cut offs are 30-45 minutes before departure depending on the city, so check the airlines website for cut off times, but an hour to an hour and a half is well ahead of time and Im sure you will breeze through and be to your gate in less than 20 min with self check in kiosks now available. Security lines will be short or non-existant.

The IND airport is usually a breeze to get through security. The plane will board 20-30 minutes prior to departure. You should be there by 5am at the latest and that means physically in the airport, not looking for a place to park. If you don't have to check any bags things go smoother and you don't have to worry about things getting taken off the plane for weight and balance issues. So get there between 4:30 and 5:00, grab a coffee after security and sit at the gate dreaming of the good time you're going to have! Have Fun!

It depends on how big the airport is and if the flight is international or not. If you are flying out of a small airport on a domestic flight at least an hour, large airport domestic flight at least 2 hours. Any flight over seas minimum of 4 hours before your flight boards.
It really depends on if you plan to take a bomb with you. If you do I would suggest you arrive 15-20 years at least before the plane leaves.

That time in the morning is the "Rush" Hour. The airport gets busy at various times throughout the day. Early in the am, around noon, 3-4pm, and 9pm and 11pm. I would get there about 4:00 am or a little before. You might have some extra time. You might be scramming to get to your gate, It depends on the airport.

Well, after I turned on the news this morning, I figured I'd come back are edit my answer. I would get to the airport now at least 2 hours for a domestic flight and 3 hours (at the minimum) for an international flight.
They are saying don't pack lotions, hair gels, shampoos in your carry on.
In case you didn't know, they foiled a plot to bomb the U.S. with chemical bombs on American (and a few foreign) airlines all coming into the U.S.

Before 5:55am. But hey, that's just me... lol Hmmm... if you have everything in order, you don't need to get there too early, but then you don't want to have to rush. And then getting your luggage checked and stuff.... Probably about 5:00. Maybe a little bit earlier. Have a nice flight!

Depends on what city you are departing from---as in, how busy the airport security turnstyles will be for you. Most airports recommend 2 hours. Based on my experience to major hubs, I'd say at least 90 minutes. Many airlines now require you to have checked in and be ready at least 30 minutes prior to departure so the extra time helps. Also, if you don't have to check bags at airline checkin, it does seem to help. Plan to remove laptop from bag and remove shoes and jackets.

For domestic flights: 1 hour before departure
For international flights: at least 2 hours before departure. You might encounter long lines at check-in as well as security. And remember, always have some time left for a coffee (or your favorite drink)!! Have a nice trip !
