I am an american and have been living in mexico for years it is absolutly safe as posted above stay out of border towns and mexico city puerto vallarta is full of americans I am sure there are certain times of year that there are as many americans as mexicans in Puerto Vallarta , as if you were traveling anywhere in the world including the US you run risks of lossing items in the hotel or if you go out to late and in bad neighborhoods you run up risk of being muged but in tourist areas like cancun puerto vallarta and many more destinations in Mexico this is rarley the case on most streets on most nights at almost any hour you are completly safe which is more then I can say for the US so I wouldn't worry just don't leave out jewels and cash in the hotel when you leave becuase where ever you are you are just asking for the maids to take it

You should be fine in Puerto Vallarta. Make sure you are staying in a 5 star hotel and that you do your research ahead of time.
Especially be careful of what you eat and drink. Drink the very best bottled water, and know that the ice cubes are going to be "risky".
Anywhere in Mexico, they do have the same standards as the US, though they have come a long way.

Mexico is as safe as any other country, it depends on your behavior and the safety measures you take...Puerto Vallarta is a lovely colonial town surrounded by tourist hotels. Please stop with the Border town bashing its bad for the tourism industry which supports many Mexican families. Don't be afraid and don't listen to scaredy cats.

I've been to Mexico four times and have never even had a feeling that I was unsafe! A lot of the cities are built on tourism so the Mexicans are generally very nice. A good rule of thumb is to not venture out alone. Being in a foriegn country can have it's difficulties and it's always good to have someone you know with you.

I travel to Mexico often and love it. Its safe but anyplace in the world common sence needs to be used. The Mexican people are freindly and polite as long as you treat them the same way. PV is lovely. Has good beaches. Its an old city thats great to walk around, shopping, eating and partying of you want. You will love it, go and relax.

The biggest danger is along the border, and anywhere away from ordinary tourist traffic. Stick to main roads, hotels, and well-lit areas. Avoid the donkey show too - you're not missing much.

The only thing that you need to know if that you are going to be safe if you are careful, meaning don't go to lonely places, try to ride a taxi from the hotel or from a safe place, don't trust anybody and eat in crowdy places, don't get crazy trying new food because you can get sick and please don't drink cheap tequila!
