I thought everyone made homemade frosting.
Basic frosting
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 tablespoons milk
Cream sugar, butter and vanilla. Add a small amount of milk (1 to 2 tablespoons). If frosting is too sweet add a little more milk. Instead of vanilla .. you can use other extracts with this basic frosting recipe.
===============================================
Chocolate
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/3 cup unsweetened dutch process chocolate
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup water
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and chocolate over low heat. Stir constantly until melted and well blended. Add the vanilla and sugar; beat with an electric mixer. Add water gradually as you beat until it is a spreadable consistency.
* sometimes I add 1 T increments more of powdered sugar to get a thicker consistency. Sometimes add 1 T of milk to get a creamier frosting. Good luck.

It is a little on the sweet side but not overbearing. Can't taste the crisco or the powdered sugar taste either.
This makes 2 batches which I always seem to need for my 11 x 15 cakes.
I use a KitchenAid Stand Up Mixer (usually on #4).
1/2 Cup Butter softened (I used salted)
1/2 Cup Crisco
6 cups Powdered sugar
3 T. milk
3 T. Heavy Whipping Cream (liquid)
2 t. clear vanilla
Cream butter & crisco VERY WELL, scrape bowl once.
While that is mixing, put the 3 T of milk & 3 T of cream in a measuring cup.
Add Vanilla, cream some more.
Turn mixer down to #2. Slowly add powdered sugar.
When it gets on the thick side, add a little of the milk & cream. (I didn't use all my cream mixture, I had just a little left in the measuring cup.)
Keep doing this until the sugar is gone & if it is too thick add some cream.
If it is too thin, add a little more sugar. But it should be ok.
It pipes good but if it gets a little mushy in the bag, just refrigerate it for a bit.
Ganache.
A very fudgey, wonderful combination of heavy cream and chocolate (sometimes butter). Heat 2/3 cup of heavy cream over the stove in a saucepan with 5 T butter. Heat until just boiling. Remove from heat and add 5 ounces of chopped semisweet chocolate. Stir until smooth. Cool until pouring consistency.

French Cream Frosting
1/4 cup flour
3/4 cup milk
Put in pan, cook until very thick, stir to keep from sticking, when it rolls around the pan it is ready, cool thoroughly.
1/4 cup margarine
1/2 cup shortening 1 teaspoon pure vanilla
pinch salt
3/4 cup sugar
Cream margarine, shortening, salt & sugar until very light. Add flour paste and beat until creamy. Add vanilla.
This is the creamest frosting I ever made, it is good on a plain yellow cake or chocolate cake. Enjoy.

This one is a lovely frosting I use a lot for my cakes.
Brown sugar frosting
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1 cup light cream, half and half
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp vanilla
In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar and white sugar, cream and flour. Mix well. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Boil until mixture reaches "soft ball stage" cool slightly. Add
vanilla. beat hard until frosting reaches dsired spreading
consistency; will lightly frost a two layer 8in or 1 9 x 13 inch
cake.
The soft ball stage is when it looks like small glass marbles.
It takes about 4 minutes to 7 minutes to boil.

I make butter cream icing all the time;
1/2 cup butter(softened)
1/2 cup solid shortening (like Crisco)
1 lb box of powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3-4 tablespoons milk
Cream butter and shortening together. Add vanilla and mix until blended. Add powdered sugar 1/2 to 1 cup at a time until well mixed. Add milk to desired consistency.
This icing can be colored very easily by using either a couple of drops of food coloring or Wilton icing color.
You can make it chocolate by adding 1/2 to 1 cup of cocoa powder before adding the milk. You will have to increase the milk to compensate for the cocoa powder.
