Because reality sucks!! Why do so many people who believe in something spend their entire lives in fear? I think this question is very broad and has a lot of ignorant suggestions. I shouldnt have dignified it with an answer, I guess it's too late now though.

We don't really know if miserable people have no belief. They fall under many miserable situations. Poverty, bad health and many more reasons, make people miserable. They possibly have beliefs, but the misery keeps them down. Sometimes when the misery is so profound, it appears to others there is no belief or they would not be so miserable. But we really don't know that. How can you tell what they believe, when they are so miserable. They probably don't know which way to turn. We can't judge a miserable person on the fact that they don't have beliefs. We can only acknowledge or see that they are miserable.

I guess I'm lucky. I don't know any miserable people to judge.
How many of the people who answered had someone in mind or are we just generalizing about hypothetical miserable people?
I suppose people in jail are miserable but many of those miserable people have found god after they were locked up.
You assume to much with your question. First that there are miserable people and second you assume to know what they believe in.
Why can't Christians or Jews or Muslims be miserable?
I think they can. I was when I was a Catholic. I believed whatever they told me then.

just because you believe in "nothing" does not mean you are miserable. You do not need to believe in god or have some sort of religion to be happy. You can also be a believer and still be miserable.

The problem isn't the nothing. It's the believing.
I don't believe in things I don't see or know through some reliable means. I don't believe in nothing. I'm grumpy, but not miserable. Miserable is the people who realize that their blind faith in things like Gods, Governments, and Corporations is killing them for someone else's profit.

All people believe in something. Wether it's their family, their job, humanity, their pets, comics, sport, etc.
Are you saying miserable people gravitate towards non-belief, or the non-belief causes them to be miserable. Either way, I think it's a pretty sweeping statement. I'm pretty sure you'll find a good mix of christians and atheists alike who are extremely happy, and likewise, some within those populations will be miserable.

because it's easier for miserable people to believe in nothing, than to believe in something, and actually not be miserable. SOme people play miserable because they want the attentiont hey feel if they have the attention from being misserable it's easier than earning attention by actually TRYING to do something with your life.
Also, if it's legitamently Miserable, its because they gave up, on life, and on everything that LIFE stands for. They no longer TRY, because of bad past experiences, even though there are people out there, who have been parazlied but can walk, people who lived with cancer, that are now cured, people out tehre, that suffered unimanginably in their lifes, that still suceeded in life..
Also, people tend to think or believe, ther eis no way out of their problems, just because they didn't find that particular outlet that could do their lives, undeniably good....
(i'm not talking religion. Just some people who go around being miserable, and not trying hard for them)

People who believe in nothing are called Nihilists. I haven't met any real Nihilists. You probably haven't either. Most people believe in something.
You are probably making the common errors of thinking that people who don't believe what you believe don't believe in anything and that people who don't believe what you believe are miserable, unhappy people.
If you actually knew people who don't believe as you do you'd find that they have a wide variety of alternative things that they do believe. You would also find that many of them are just as happy as the people who believe as you believe?
What do you believe? it doesn't matter. Whether you are a theist or an atheist, if you think that the other side is really miserable then you are wrong. I know many people on both sides. They are equally happy.
