Stevens 200 in 308 is very versitile and 308 is a cheap ammunition if you buy surplus. It can be had for as low as $280, but then you need to buy a scope.

At the Academy store in Sugarland, TX. I saw the Mossberg bolt action center fire for under $300. It had a handsome, composite camo stock and was available in .243, .270 and .308.
It was a handsome rifle offered in some popular calibers. Check your nearest Academy stores.

It always helps to tell us, what you're going to hunt? what type of competition shooting? What's "cheap" to you? You'll get a better answer.
A bolt action .270 is great for deer hunting, but if you're going to be doing a lot of competition shooting a .308 might work out better for you in the long run because of the availability of surplus ammo...

You can buy a decent Yugo SKS for about $150. Shoots 7.62x39 ammo, (readily available surplus) 7.62 is equivalent in caliber .308

the calibers you listed aren,t chambered in "cheap guns". cheap guns are usually military surplus. you can get mosin nagant rifles for well under $100 and surplus ammo for 10 cents a round.anything in .308 brittish is also cheap to feed (7.62x51 nato surplus ammo). i looked at a FAL 308 at dunham,s sporting goods today and it was around 400 nib.
