MORDECHAI HERSHMAN
(1888-1940) Akavyo Ben Mahalalel
As a youngster, Mordechai Hershman was an extremely busy and well-travelled chorister, gradually learning his trade from several of the greatest names in Eastern European khazones. All this was against the express wishes of his father, who considered a life of song to be beneath the dignity of a respectable mer- cantile family. As a cantor, he achieved great renown in Europe, attaining the position at the Great Synagogue in Vilna. Coming to America in 1920, he soon caught up with the household names Rosenblatt and Kwartin, joining them in the triumvirate of the cantorial recordings Hall of Fame.
