yes, it is possible to relinquish your rights to a child.
in most cases, the father signs away his rights as the father of the child. he will not have to pay child support, but he is no longer legally entitled to be involved in the child's life. there are some cases of mother's signing away their parental rights as well, though.
a father signing away his parental rights most often occurs when the mother marries another man and wants her new husband to adopt the child. if the child's birth father agrees to such an arrangement, then he is removed as legal father of the child and the new husband is placed as the legal father. sometimes the birth father will maintain contact with the child, especially if the child is older, but most of these cases occur with much younger children that the birth father doesn't want to participate in raising.
for example, a friend of mine got pregnant by her boyfriend, but they broke up while she was pregnant. she moved out of state and had the baby. the birth father wanted nothing to do with my friend or the baby, so she had him sign away his rights so he no longer had to be involved with the child. she has a new boyfriend and if they get married, she can have him adopt the baby as his own since the birth father is no longer legally in the picture.

It is not necessarily the same in every state, but most places I know of you can sign away your parental rights to a child. This has nothing to do with adoption, this could be as an unwed mother or father or someone going through a divorce that wants to sign away all rights to a child. You need to get an attorney to do so because of the legal papers and language that needs to be drawn up, but yes, it can be done.

I am not sure what you are referring to, but if there are two parents 'in the picture', one cannot give the child up for adoption without the consent of the other. Many adoptions have been overturned because both parents did not give consent. We know someone that this happened to and the judge gave the child back to the father after 4 years because he had been in jail and never signed away his rights.

If there are two parents who are not married or are divored then one parent can terminate all legal rights to the child.. my dad terminated all legal rights to me when I was 2.. however, that parent is still responsible to pay child support.. and the only way to get passed that is for the parent with the child to go to court and say that they do not want or need the child support. My mom also had to do this when I was younger because my dad was arrested about the time I was 5 and was being held for not paying child support.. my mom felt that since he had two other children by then, who were living off of jelly and bread (literally), despite their welfare checks, they needed the money more.. since we had a house and food and clothes and everthing.. so she had to go before a judge and prove that we didn't need the child support.

No, even if you go to court a judge will NOT allow a parent to sign away their rights unless there is someone, like a new spouse to adopt the child. Even if the other parent has nothing to do with the child they are still responsible for child support.

I'm not sure about other states, but my sister and her friend signed away their rights as parents to my mother a long time ago. They simply wrote out on a sheet of paper that they were making her guardian, then they signed it, had a witness sign it, and then my mother signed it. It wasn't a legal document but my mother's lawyer said that if she brought it into court then the judge would acknowledge it as real. In the end though my sister and her friend turned their lives around and my mother gave the kids back, but she still has the paper if they ever go wrong again.

yes, a parent, either mom or dad, can in fact sign their parental rights away. It's not hard to do. It doesnt' matter if the other parent doesn't want them too. If they don't want the responsibilities anymore, then they can do it. I think it's a lot better than having an abortion. It's what they do when you give your baby up for adoption. They sign away all rights to their child.

One parent can sign their rights away but only to the other parent. Also a child can be emancipated from their parents but the court decides weather their is a good reason for doing that. In case you don't know what that is it is when a child decides to sign their rights to themselves as an adult and fend on their own.

Yes you can. If you want proof look at the law concerning adoption and custody. In South Africa where i live it really happens a lot, and it is legal. You give up all your rights as a parent, and then of cause both parents must agree if they are married.
