Did it change color? If so, take him to the vet. If it was always that color, it could just be natural.

First, ask your vet. Some dogs, especially Chows, have a distinctive darker tongue or partially-dark tongue. If the dog has any Chow mixed into its lineage, that could be it. If this is a sudden new development, your vet would definitely be the one to ask. Also dogs' tongues will turn dark if they get Pepto-Bismol in their mouth (just like people's tongues, will do the same thing). Make sure any houseplants, medications, anything you don't want your dog to chew, is safely out of reach.

If your dogs tongue is dark and purplish it may have Chow or Weimeriner in it. If not you may want to check with your vet.

Is this something new, or something you just previously failed to notice? Many dogs have dark tongues. Shar-pei have kind of a purplish/black tongue. If it's something new, get your dog to the vet.

Its normal for some dog breeds to have dark spotted tongues. If the dog has some Chow in him he will have a few black/bluish spots on his tongue.

What kind of dog do you have? It is not uncommon for a chow to have what is referred to as a purple tongue. If your dog is mixed with a chow this could be what is causing his tongue to be like that.
If you are concerned that it could be something serious the consult with your vet.

It's great you notice!
It's a sign of circulation. If your dog runs and gets his heart rate up it should turn more pink, but in a relaxed state it may be less pink but not usually dark (unless as mentioned previously, its normal for the breed). Keep an eye on it. Also, watch for the gums to change color. They should be pink, white gums are a sign of low blood pressure.

He could have a heart condition. You should get him to the vet.
My dog has an enlarged heart and after I found out the vet told me to watch his tongue and gums. The gums should be a nice pink color - if not that is another sign.
