I don't know if it's "proper" but I spray 409 on the inside and outside of the pot. Then I rub the stains with paper towels and rinse really well. If you have the time, coffeepots clean up great in the upper shelf of the dishwasher.

i worked in a retaurant for many years and we used to run clear hot water into them pour that out and use ice cubes and salt with a little cold water to scrap the stains off of the inside

I don't think you should boil water in your coffee pot because it will break, but the vinegar is right. Run a cycle with 4c of vinegar and then run with 2 cycles of water.

fill the caraffe with water and add a cap of white vinegar; turn on and run machine as you normally would. fill the pot twice more with cold to lukewarm water (no more vinegar) and run out. your next pot of coffee will taste fresher due to the vinegar being so acidic and being able to disinfect your pot.
