Didnt you always respect the professor who didnt give the suck-ups "A's" just for pathetically trying to stroke the professors ego? SO why see God any differently?

There are many decent religious people, but today, more than ever, it is clear that the worst people on earth are also ultra-pious...never missing a God-suck-up session. So God's gonna do what with that....reward the F (in life) student with eternal virgin orgies?

Ok, heres a radical idea. Imagine (if God exists) a secure self-sufficient God who doesnt give a sh** whether your pathetically try to suck-up to him, hes just gonna grade you on how you live...period. Whoa...wacky idea.

The god of monotheism was formed during a time of tyrant dictators who would kill you for failing to show proper adoration. They modeled god after that.

Okay, among all the stupid religious questions ranging from people preaching God to people hating on God (which is why I normally avoid questions in the Religion section), your question caught my eye.

Yes, I was always the kid to hate suckups. And yes, I am a practicing Catholic. But I do not find this question offensive at all (I believe people are entitled to their opinions and I don't feel the need to push my religion on others)....actually I find it really funny and amusing. I'm impressed. Wow, a Catholic with a sense of humor. Who knew?

Basically I am the same way I am in the classroom. I try my best in terms of being a good person, and like everybody else, I make mistakes along the way (and according to my beliefs, I am forgiven if I am sorry). I don't try to act like I'm super saintly or that I'm perfect. It has nothing to do with my beliefs, but it's just how I am in terms of my personality.

I'm not bashing people that are very devout with their beliefs and feel that it is part of their religion to "spread the word." Whatever. If it makes them feel like they are being extra religious then so be it, but at the end of the day, the only thing on my conscious is how I've been acting.....and not how religious I appear to other people.

Anyways, the idea you wrote about isn't anything new. There are religions that exist that believe in that kind of stuff....for example, deism (which many you may or may not know but many famous philosophers and some of our country's founding fathers were) and they believed that a higher being does exist (God) but He put humans on this earth to do whatever they want. It's basically people believing that God exists but organized religion isn't necessary, because God doesn't care.

At first I was going to ignore this question and report it as abusive. But then I thought that maybe this is a hurt person who is expressing that woundedness in this way, and that it is actually a serious question, tho phrased in a bitter way. So, here goes my best attempt:

God is 'a secure self-sufficient God who is not 'partial' to anyone. He doesn't exactly grade you on how you live, or anyone,, because everyone would fail. He doesn't fall for suck-ups either, "not everyone who says, 'Lord, Lord' " What God wants is sincere effort to follow His guidance and cooperate with His grace.

I like the train of thought. I would take it a step further and suggest that there is no test at the end. Take a look at the natural world. It's all about survival. God gave us life, asked us to procreate and to believe in him. And then he wished us luck, because the garden is filled with stuff that'll kill a guy.

If in fact we have free will and I believe we do and if in fact, we are forgiven, and I believe we are, then we simply need to acknowledge the gifts God has given us and get on with living. No living man knows what lies in store for us in heaven. It seems very silly to assume the next life will be a pure mirror version of this one. Really what would be the point?

Wrong sort of relationship. God isn't a professor or teacher, He's not grading us.

Your idea, while somewhat true and completely sarcastic, is wrong. God IS a secure self-sufficient God who loves you more than a parent, more than a spouse, and knows your heart. You can do all the right things you want, but if your heart is bad, God sees that.

I think, you've missed the point. God chooses us , we don't choose him. Every fanatic you see is not necessarily chosen. The chosen know that they've done nothing to deserve Gods blessing and the biggest sinners of us feel the most. When you show your wife that you love her , are you sucking up? If you are then your love is not genuine , the same is true with God. He separates the suck ups from those who love him.

Thank you for your question.

In the Book of Matthew(the Bible) chapter 25 Jesus is talking about the people who think they are "His" and the people who really are. He calls those who don't practice what they preach goats and they get thrown in the lake of fire with the devil. God loves everyone that's why Jesus died for our sins. John chapter 3 verses 16 &17

ok, you're partly right. God 'grades us' on how we have lived our lives, how much we have done something for others and genuinely cared. all the piety and complicated prayers mean nothing unless there's something behind them--love for others, respect for yourself, love for God. it's the actions and the intent behind them, not the pretty words or the 'sucking up,' as you say.
unfortunately, a few people fall off the boat and everyone else gets blamed.
