I'm gonna work 4 like 3 months abroad 2 save 4 a car but my father says it's selfish and immature for me to save 4 that when i 'have it all' at home and should pay ''at least'' (lol) the internet conection... darn, I'm in college, i have no full time or stable job and I wanna buy some stuff 4 me!and use my money 4 my outings with friends, is that really as evil and selfish as he puts it? :|
and he does have money! my parents have a house , are buying an appartment, have a decent car and 2 stores in a mall (which they rent). :S are they being abusive? I guess they are, what should i do! I'm pissed!

ok, 1st of , it's not MY internet conection, everyone uses it and i get told a bunch of stuff 4 using it, 2nd
i don't live in the US where u can just work a couple hours in a fastfood rest., i live in south america, where the only jobs that really pay are the ones parents have, or else u have to work on the streets, there are really not much options, that's why i'm going to work as a MAID in the US for 3 and a half months starting in december and probably not sleep making overtime and stuff so that i can come back and buy a cheap car and get braces which my parents shouldve payed 4 when i was younger! and also, i'd love to pay 4 their internet conection IF i had a full time stable job, but im just gonna work 4 les than 4 months and barely earn money to maintain my car, with it's gas and all and i'll get a job here just 4 that cause i really dont think i will b able 2 aford anything else...so i think it's kinda evil 4 my dad to be like that :|

It's a little much if you will only be working 3 months. For that short period I'd say no you really shouldn't have to pay anything.

However that is their house and their rules. Your only options are to pay the bill or look at other living arrangements which in the long run will cost more.

Try to negotiate a one time payment and not a bill that is going to get cut off when the job ends.

Stop being so spoiled, you have it better than you know. You should be helping out, whether or not they have money, why is it fair for you to use them and not help out? Grow up, get a job, and paying a $30 internet bill a month, well... you should be happy that's all they're looking for. I held 3 jobs in college, lived in a dorm, and still paid rent to my parents when I wasn't even living there-and I never complained. It makes you understand the importance of saving your money and using it for practical things, and helping pay your way through life. Stop being such a spoiled brat, you're parents are being too lenient as far as I'm concerned.

Well, it seems harsh but maybe he is just feeling like he had to pay to get where he is so you should too. My dad was like this but not while I was in school. He too was very well off and didn't need any money from me. He didn't charge me rent until I graduated from school. BUT I had to show him my grades and he made sure I was doing well. He wouldn't have let me go back if I wasn't. I think it is important for you to be focusing on school and getting good grades. Maybe make a deal with him and work during the summer and tell him you will pay the Internet bill and for some groceries during the summers? Will he go for that?
good luck!!

I doubt this is the answer you're looking for, but honestly, as long as you're living in your parents' house, you should contribute. You are using their electricity, probably eating the food they buy, maybe creating wear & tear on various household items.

Can't you give them, like $20 or $30 a week, just to show them you appreciate all they've done for you?

I hardly think they're being abusive. Maybe your parents only seem like they have money. Maybe they're up to their eyeballs in debt. Do you really know their financial situation? Or are you just assuming, because they have a house and are buying an apartment, they're financially stable?

Also: who is paying for your college? If they are, then you owe them. Big time.

Let me ask you...how do you feel about it? I think deep down, he doesn't want to let you go, and is trying to find some way to make you stay home. Save up, and move out, or, depending on the kind of college, settle for a dorm room. Get a job, and work your **** off, and prove it to him. If you don't have a job, how are you going to be able to pay for the internet connection. No, they're not being abusive, but, some times it's too hard to let someone they love too darn much go. In your case, they just love you too darn much, and don't want you to go. But, do keep in touch with them!

let me see, you want to blow money and buy junk, and you are going abroad,

Let me see, yep you should be paying at least a small amount.
I would bet most likely they are trying to teach you to be responsbilble so you can own a home latter and have investments, and not live from pay check to pay check.

And I bet, but could be wrong they are going to put that money you pay back and give it to you when you grad college.

If you don't like living there and paying a small amount of the bills, move out, get an apartment and live on your own.

Yea he's trying to help you get responsibility.. if you want ask him to put any rent you give to him in a seperate account for you to use when you move out, but you wont be able to waste in the meantime

Uh....the free ride is over. You're an adult now. You have to realize that you have to start paying your own way.

It's his house, his rules. If it's your internet connection, you pay.

If you don't learn these lessons in responsibility, you will be in for a tough time later in life.

(Be glad he hasn't started charging you rent........yet)

If that is all he is asking you to do is just pay for the Internet, what is the beef about. Are they not supporting you in every other way? I don't think that is asking to much.
