Not necessary. But all teeth that have less than 50% tooth structure should be crowned. And in my opinion, all back teeth that have had root canals should have crowns placed to prevent breakage of the tooth because you use alot of force on it when you chew. You can put in the filling material for now and eventually, in the future the root canal tooth will break and you will have to get a crown then.

Teeth that have had root canals do need crowns. A root canal takes out the blood supply to this tooth making it very dry and brittle. If you bite down on something just right, you could break this tooth in a way that it can't be saved. I'm always sad when a person has invested that much money in a tooth has to have it taken out. One of the few places where a tooth wouldn't need a crown would be on a front tooth and this is only if there is plenty of natural tooth structure there.

More info needed! Generally yes it is always good to have a crown placed after a root canal. If the tooth is a molar especially a bottom molar absolutely get the crown...when you have a root canal you tooth now becomes very brittle increasing the chances of cracking...you just paid for the root canal if your tooth crack you can loose it why waste all that money.no if it is a front tooth and your doesnt interfere with your bite then you might not have to have it done. Every situation is different as it depends on you excursive movement ( the way your teeth meet ) if the tooth is a stone in your occlusion then get the crown

Yes, when you have a root canal, what the dentist is doing is taking small files and filing out your nerve and root of the tooth. now keep in mind a tooth is made up of enamel 1 st layer,2ND layer is dentin, 3rd layer is root or the nerve of the tooth, so when the root and nerve are all filed out you have very little tooth structure left. Now the dentist does fill the canals with a material called gut ta percha then they sometimes build the tooth up with a material called core post material. all tho the material is very strong there is nothing stronger than your own tooth.so to keep your tooth from splitting or chipping your dentist will recommend a full crown to make sure your tooth doesn't brake. I myself feel if you are going to put approx.$1100.00 to 1600.00 on a root canal and build-up i would want to secure my investment from braking or any thing that can increase the possibility of fail er. Cause if you didn't care about your teeth from the start you wouldn't have saved it l.You would have had it pulled from the start. i hope this gives u a little insight and helps you understand why you need a crown after a root canal.

YES! I dont care how much tooth structure is left, when the tooth's blood supply is cut off, it becomes very weak and WILL break. You spent the money for the root canal, go and protect what you just paid for. I've seen this on so many patients who think that just because the tooth doesnt hurt, it doesnt need anymore work. Trust me, its worth it to do the crown

On a back tooth yes, unless you are prepared to possibly loose that tooth one day. The reason: A rootcanal takes the blood supply out of a tooth causing it to become brittle. Molars take the most bite force of all the teeth. Over time the more brittle the tooth gets, the higher the chance that you could bite on something and it would crumble. Sometimes doing this is unrepairable. I have seen this happen 100's of times. If you want to get the full value of the money you spent get a crown placed within the next couple of months.

No, it's not.
I had a root canal done and do not have a crown on the tooth.
What my dentist told me is that tooth could last a lifetime, or you could bite down on something and it could break it. It all depends on the strength of the tooth. I try to be careful what I eat on that side and pamper mine as much as I can.

Of course is necessary!!
Because the tooth becomes brettle and fragile, ant it needs a crown to keep it from breaking.

Huskymom wrote my answer, except I'd say to proceed with the crown as soon as you possibly can in most cases. If there are financial concerns, such as waiting for a new insurance year, proceed with caution and do your serious chewing on the other side.
