If it's messing up your teeth, it is. Otherwise, I'd say it's cheaper than therapy.

No it is not normal and the only thing that can help is to make the teenager change the habbit on something else.
maybe giving him a fruit or glasses of juice just to keeping busy from the thumb.
Something would be nice its a ball,everytime he feel the need to put the thumb in his mouth,just tell him to squeeze the ball.good luck!

Yes it is the sucking pulls the teeth forward then you have to get braces for a long time.
