Any kind of extended exercise (walking, running, etc) will help get the metabolism going, and adding a good supplement to the plan can also help.
If you're looking to supplement your diet plan, you'll most likely want a good metabolic booster and appetite suppressant. I'd suggest taking a look at Herbalean. It does have Ephedra, which was unbanned this year by the FDA - so it's legal in the US again. It also has Hoodia for the appetite suppression, so the combination works VERY well for me.
I've been taking it for a couple months now, and the Hoodia keeps me from snacking and gets rid of the sweet cravings, while the Ephedra gives me a good energy boost through the whole day.
It's made by the original makers of MetaboLife, and they've improved the formula with Hoodia and 77 trace minerals and herbs. It's also an extended release formula, so you won't get the jitters from the Ephedra like you would with MetaboLife.

The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be. You could do some moderate strength training and do as much cardio as you can. I know it sounds cliche but the only thing that truly works is cardio and sensible diet. And another trick to get your metabolism going is eat breakfast!!! Also, eat a bunch of small meals throughout the day, as opposed to 2 or 3 big ones. Feeding your body like this speeds up the metabolism. Good luck!

I've tried everything since I've always USED to have a slow metabolism.....but I've found that the old fashioned way works the best....calorie counting and very small portions 7-8 times a day! I lost about 40 pounds in about 6 weeks, and I ate all the time! But remember to keep your fat and starch content down! I did the low carb thing once...and I did lose some weight, but it came back even after I was eating healthy! I'm sorry, but I need potatoes and rice once in a while! Oh yeah ...and excercising is good too...even just walking!

It's true that nothing can replace a sensible diet and regular exercise for staying in shape. But there are times when diet and exercise don’t seem to be helping. Lots of protein, use the stairs instead of the elevator, walk if possible instead of driving, little things like those kick up your metabolism and keep burning fat all day. If you lower your carbs be careful not to lower them too much or your body will think you you have no sugar.

The truth is eat spicy hot foods to rev up your metabolism and burn off fat. Drinking ginger tea may actually increase your metabolism as much as 25 percent, helping you to burn off extra calories.
Cabbage soup diet worked for me.

As previous posters have stated, movement is really the only way to get your metabolism started. Cardio. You have to get that heart pumping. Get your heart rate up. If you are trying to lose weight, that is the best way to do it.
