Dear Emily B: My personal experience (daily) of the Holy Spirit is a gentle-ness and subtlty and an aura of being my Best Friend. He will always speak on your behalf and lead you gently and properly.

Created as a Comforter and Guide - He will speak to you as your "Conscience" in a toneless voice. Yet, His thoughts are crystal clear. He is the mechanism of miracles. He can manipulate space, dimension and Time. On your behalf.

He holds your Nature as closely as is possible to that of the Creator/Father that you never become too "unlike" Him. This requires your listening to His Voice.

Plainly, He is so subtle it is not exactly a "feeling." He is the ultimate guidance in all issues - The Voice for God. All direct communications you desire to have with God - go through the Holy Spirit to Him.

As the Voice for God He teaches you Truth as He was responsible for teaching Jesus.

I "hear" the Holy Spirit's whispery Voice all day long and commune with Him all day long - every day.

It's not like it is an ongoing feeling. When I first received the Holy Spirit I was totally stressed out and the stress just seemed to fade away without my knowing it. A couple of times when I have been considering doing something that was a sin I felt a strong conviction coming on me telling me that what I was considering was wrong! Other times I have been led to go someplace that I didn't have a good reason to go and I ended up meeting up with someone who needed to know about Christ or something like that. Other times Scriptures will come unbidden into my mind like one time when I was tempted to start drinking and I was reminded that God has a great plan for my life. It's not like your personality gets taken away or like you suddenly have two voices in your thought life on a continual basis. God is much more subtle and tender and loving with his children to do that.

That is not an easy thing to describe, but I'll give it a shot. It's a feeling of warmth and comfort, of reassurance. It's a wonderful feeling that makes me further respect God and live in awe of his creations.
