If you are buying used you should consider buying from a respectable dealer which can offer you an extended warranty as for the cost of repair and parts for VW's are very steep. Do not buy anything (any make unless you are a collector) over 5 years old, since you will get a vehicle that will have a lot of wear and tear already, plus the wear and tear you will incur.
If you are buying a brand new Jetta... Go for it!!! They have been improved greatly and the gas per mil age provided has increased. Do your homework before you visit any dealer and try to find the best model that will fit your needs or wants. I have a friend who just bought one (brand new!!) and I tell you that they are awesome.. the interior is magnificent and state of the art.. you can even get it with the Ipod and Satellite radio capabilities the audio is phenomenal.. plus the safety ratings are very good.. .
I hope I could help you a bit.
Good Luck!!
Regards,
Indhy.

YES! My 2006 Jetta 2.5 is the best car I found in it's price range and higher! I test drove the 2006 Volvo 240-Lot's more money and less fun to drive. I live in a state where we have tons of snow, so when I got my Jetta in Feb. it was put to the test. With the traction control feature I had better control than when i drove my 4wheel drive Cherokee. And for safety-you can't beat it.

They are wonderful cars. I have a 2004 VW Jetta 4cyl Turbo Diesel. It is silver with a gray leather interior, sunroof power everything, and heated seats. It has plenty of get up and go even with 4 people, but the best part is I get 45mpg in the city, and 55mpg on the highway. Best car you'll ever buy for the money.

my family...well, my dad could not get enough of these cars...
usually because he always needed parts for one or two. My experience with VW (rabbits, dashers, jettas) are, they are not dependable. That goes for Audis too.
However....my husband drove a golf for a few years and still longs to have that car back. I think he sold it b/c it was in the shop all the time but he says it's just b/c he wanted a jeep ( a more man-ly ride)
Good luck with your decision - you may want to check out Consumer Reports and see what they have to say. Usually, they are much more biased towards the Japanese cars - my husband and I have decided Consumer Reports MUST be a Japanese - owned company. :)
