Yes it is possible.
Some cats are oversensitive to the chemicals found on the collars. Collars are pointless for fleas anyway, better to get Advantage or Frontline.
If the collar was ment for a dog, the cat may be in trouble. Dog collars kill cats. Please act accordingly.

You don't. Flea colalrs are not good products to use on any pet. They don't work anymore if they get wet, and they are toxic if eaten. Cats should not wear any collar if they go outside as they can get caught on something and strangle themselves. the only regular collars out there that are safe for cats are actually called "safe cat collar". they break away if the cat gets caught on something. Most indoor cats do not need a flea preventative. If you still want to get one, or if your cat goes outside, then the best option for you is to purchasea product called frontline plus. You can get it at the vet, or sometimes on line. It is only garunteed through a vet though if you have a prob using it. it is a topical flea and tick medicine that you put on the back of the cats neck once a month while it is warm outside. It is the best option. DO NOT use over the counter flea medications like Biospot, or Hartz. They have been known to actually harm or kill a cat as they are made with an older type of pesticide that is harmful to cats. (Even though they make it for them) Overall, refrain from using the flea collar, especially if you are keeping him inside. Call your vet for some more ideas, and have fun with your new cat!

Yes, depending on the collar, the cat can be poisoned by flea collars. Have your friend take along the collar so the vet will know what to look for and what might be affecting the cat.

Tell her to take the flea collar with her. My sister bought an outdated (I didn't know flea collars had expiration dates) Hartz collar with an ingredient that the vet said had been outlawed. The cat almost died.
My vet also says that flea collars are a waste of money--that all they do is make the fleas move to another location on the pet.

some cats are very allergic to that stuff, one of my cats got huge open sores under one of those things, it may be giving the cat chemical burns, she should have just gotten the flea drop you put on the back of their neck, revoloution or advantage, buy it from the vet, some cats hate collars so much they try to chew them off and strangle themselves, a cat should only have a halter for walking them or taking them to the vet, and only a collar if the cat doesnt seem to mind it. a chip in his shoulder will find him as well or better than a collar.

Sometimes cats can have allergic reactons to flea collars, but for the most part they just don't like wearing them, and put up a lot of resistance to get them off.

Of course there is something foreign around his or her neck! Try using another method like advance flea and tick!!
Collars are not for cats! Cats are very independent unlike dogs!!!

Flea collars as well as other OTC flea products most certainly can cause seizures in cats and dogs. They can also cause other neurological damage and death. Do NOT ever use any OTC flea collar, topical, powder, etc.The pesticides used in these products is highly concentrated and very toxic to pets.

Yes it is; these damned things can kill. Use Frontline drops instead. The collars are spreading organophosphorics over the cats body 24/7, the cat licks them off....kidney and liver disease result.
