AnalogX VIN View is a free online VIN decoder that allows you to see the information about your vehicle that it contains. VIN View supports decoding of any vehicle identification number that was issued after 1978, which is when ISO 3779 was established to make a uniform way to track vehicles. If you have a car you would like to lookup prior to 1978, I would recommend going to Auto Insurance Tips, they have one of the more comprehensive listings of VIN's plus some additional related information.
Operation is simple, enter the VIN number (17 characters, A thru Z and 0 thru 9) and click decode. On the decode page you'll see your VIN again and the position of each character, then on the bottom portion you'll see what position and characters map to what information. As more information becomes available, more details about the vehicle will be displayed (such as the model, engine size, options, etc), please be patient!
VIN's are normally located in several locations on a car, but the most common places are in the door frame of the front doors, on engine itself, around the steering wheel, or on the dash near the window. If you can't find it in any of those areas, then don't ask me because I certainly don't know! :) Either call the dealership for the car manufacturer and ask them, or search online for a site dedicated to your particular vehicle (or check the above mentioned site).

Yes, there are several site offering Free VIN reports but there is no guarantee
about their legitimacy. The only true free vin check site is nicb.org but
the data is not that complete.

Although they are several sites claiming they offer good Carfax substitutes
oftentimes the reports they provide are very basic. The only way to get a legitimate
Carfax for free or cheap is to ask the car seller. If that's not possible there are
reliable cheaper sources. It's free to to check the VIN if it exists, but you'll have to
pay for a vehicle history report. They're cheaper than CarFax and the information is just as good.
Just visit this site to learn more http://bit.ly/CHEAPCARFAX only $5 per report.

There are no free VIN reports, a la Carfax. But, most dealers have commercial Carfax accounts and can provide you with one at little or no cost. Some dealers even post the Carfax reports on the vehicle so you can see right from the start that everything is OK.

One caution though. If you use the dealer's Carfax report, you don't get their buy-back guarantee. Just pay for the Carfax report. It's very cheap insurance!

That VIN decoder just tells you how the car was equipped when it left the factory. It tells you nothing about what happened once it rolled off the assembly line though.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.
