I do worship Mayan and Aztec gods. I do public rituals for all 8 pagan holidays which are Mayan and Aztec themed. I built a 15" mediation circle in my yard, ringed by stones carved with the names of the sacred 20 day signs from the calendar, and to the west is a 7' tall, carved Tree of Life.

This might be a really crazy and unexpected answer but I belive that these gods of some tribes of the ancient times were .. umm.. lifeforms that people would simply call Aliens.
I mean.. I can't imagine how they built all the temples and the tunnel systems thru massive stone just with work of hand. Made by humans.
It's so precise and so on. There must have been other lifeforms helping to build these things.
So yeah. I think that there were these Aliens and they had great abilities of course. Better technology, better spiritual skills and so on.
Maybe they thought they are responsible for the things on earth like for the rain for example. So they have seen these great lifeforms as for their gods.
The same thing goes for the Dogons. A really ancient tribe from Africa.
Sounds crazy, doesn't it ? Anyway. That's my opinion.
But to answer your question. I guess these " Aliens " were there for the Mayans. That's why other tribes don't know them and have other gods. Maybe there were other such lifeforms with such abilities and that were the gods for the other tribes and I am really sure that there were lifeforms with the same but way better inteligence ( My spelling is not the best. I know ) like us on earth way before the humans.

Because the Spanish came in and brutally pwnt them, under the pretext of "crusading" (I was told the Spanish considered what they did in the Americas just another "crusade").
Ironically, the Spanish only "won" because diseases which the natives didn't have any immunity to were wiped out by the millions. I heard that if the people living in the "New World" didn't die out like that, Europeans wouldn't of made the kinds of strides they did here. It'd be more like China or India, or even most African countries, where they'd hold the country with a small military, but later would be pushed out.
Was it good or bad? I don't know. All I know is, if things didn't happen the way they did, I wouldn't be here right now writing this. And I doubt many others would be here either. And people like Hitler or Stalin would be ruling the world right now most likely.

Exactly right. My tradition still honors Father Sun, Mother Earth and Grandmother Moon. Between them they nurture us and provide for our every need. Without either one of them there would be no life for any of us. They are not gods though they are simply honored for what they are, with simple ceremonies and festivals. More or less, any excuse for a party. lol. But this is what Christianity really is. Christ is Celtic pagan for the Sun messiah, as in Cryst-alline, the illuminating, enlightening one. Christmas is the Celtic pagan festival for the birth of the new sun. Every winter the sun symbolically dies when he drops below the horizon, but by 25th december is clearly above the horizon again. Signifying the evergreen immaculate conception of giving birth to oneself. Hence the evergreen tree's, holy, ivy, mistletoe etc at Christmas. Easter is Ishtar, The Celtic Cross, the sun in the cross constellation during the spring equinox. Signifying the resurrection of life after its death in the winter. It is a fertility festival, hence the fertility eggs and bunnies at Easter. The early Christian believers, destroyed all the ancient Celtic circles, plagiarized all their terminology festivals, dates and all, and started going by the name of Christians. There is no getting away from their horrendous past and the truth which will always find a way of surviving for justice. One day soon though. lol Practicing Shaman... quantum physics rocks.

The Mayans weren't big on proselytising and they didn't do the missionary thing much. The Christians who conquered those parts saw themselves as having a duty to tell the Mayans that the Christian God was better.
Besides, their names are totally unpronounceable. I thought the Green Giant was the god of sweetcorn, anyway.

I think there is something to be said for religion being inherited from our ancestors. Most people would feel a little strange worshiping the God of somebody else's ancestor, especially when there are so many different Gods out there, how is one suppose to choose? Not to mention most people don't go out seeking a new religion, they either grew up with it or it gets handed to them on a platter and shoved in their face.

We do not honor the Mayan gods b/c the people that originally worshipped them were wiped out.
Jesus' followers grew to be in such large numbers that the Roman empire decided to adopt his preachings in order to make their transition of power easier. The Romans wanted more people under thier control. All of the traditional Christian holidays are around the same times as the ancient pagan holidays or celebrations.

Because they tragically were pretty much wiped from the face of the planet by the conquestadors. And all but four of their codexes were destroyed by Catholic missionaries who thought that their culture was the work of the devil.
Think about all of that knowledge - particularly of astronomy - that was lost forever.
Yet another example of the tragedies caused, allegedly, in the name of God.

I've always been partial to the Greek/Roman Gods. Much more entertaining and lively than the boring, jealous, wrathful paternal God.

In the Holy Bible it says: Thou Shalt have no other Gods before Me ! In the days when all these false gods were being worshipped, it was done by the heathens. Those days are gone as all the false gods have been destroyed.
The true God says, Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me!
