US Army Special Forces (Green Berets); their training can take over a year to complete, and the Rangers only a few months. Many SF have also been to Ranger School, or were former Rangers. Also, the SF are extremely selective. One of their schools they have to go to is Special Forces Selection, that is just so they can be chosen to move on the the Qualification Course. Not everybody gets chosen, only the best. The Rangers on the other hand allow anyone that can complete the training.
Also, SF are very intelligent individuals. They have to learn at least one other foreign language so they can go behind enemy lines and train indigenous forces (locals who side with the US) to fight.
Rangers learn to kill. SF learn to kill, then they learn to teach people to kill. That's the sum of it all. That's why the SF are better and more combat effective.

Only two answers were even remotely in the ball park,
boredstiff was accurate but brief however....
DJ Cosmolicious was more informative, ( I got all teary eyed) I salute you sir!

I would like to add The US Army Green Beret are America's first and best Military Special Forces Unit, Navy SEALS while having much fame pale in any comparison with the Green Beret as MOS's 18 A through E, Live, train, eat, fight and die alongside the indigent persons of the host country. SEALS make movies Green Berets makes war! But that is why they are known as "The Quiet Professionals".
Rangers while Elite Troops are not true Special Forces I do consider them Green Beret in larval stage.

Marine Corp.....Well they finally got their first ever Special Forces unit in February of 2006 and as far as I am concerned I would have much greater respect for SEALS were they drawn from The Corp as opposed to the Navy, The Marine Corp is the branch of the Navy Department real men join.

Michael C was accurate also.

My former brother-in-law retired after 30 years in the Special Forces (Green Berets). A long time friend of mine spent 10 years as a US Army Ranger.

They both argee with my assesment (I served with both Green Berets & Rangers) that bottom line...they have different missions, different requirments and skills & various goal and expectations.

One is niether better than the other. Both groups and individual soldiers make outstanding contributions to the defense of the USA.

I agree with boredstiff. The main role of the Army Rangers is to seize and hold key positions such as airfields and hold until the main force arrives. Special Forces soldiers have many roles but their primary roles are to conduct unconventional warefare and recon. But if you really must know who is the best you may want to listen to the ballad of the Green Beret. Not all rangers can become green berets but most green berets that want the ranger tab can get it. With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

It's not really a matter of better, since they perform very different functions.

While both types of units fall under the category of Special Operations Forces, only the Green Berets are properly categorized as Special Forces. Rangers are really a very elite group of infantry soldiers - they don't perform unconventional warfare functions, like Special Forces.

75th Ranger Regiment is primarily configured to perform one main task - airfield takedown. Ranger school requires that you've already successfully passed Airborne training, and many have also completed Air Assault training. Ranger school trains soldiers in combat survival and advanced infantry/small unit tactics (raids and ambushes), and requires a high level of physical fitness and motivation - you won't get enough to eat, and you won't get enough sleep, for 8 weeks. There's also special training in mountain, swamp/jungle/riverine environments.

Special Forces main mission is to insert behind enemy lines and raise partisan forces in the enemy's rear to harass and worry his lines of communication. While many are Ranger qualified when they go, which isn't a bad idea because the physical fitness and motivation level requirements are similar, especially when it comes to the infiltration/exfiltration elements of the training. However, the heart of SF training is the Q-course, where soldiers train to link up with potential indigenous partisan allies, then attempt to persuade them to join the U.S. war effort, and then train and perhaps lead them in small-unit tactics (again the Ranger training coming in handy).

While Rangers are all about Direct Action, SF is more about Foreign Internal Defense (going to foreign countries and training elements of their militaries and other advising) and Unconventional Warfare. They also perform special reconaissance, and of course, counter-terror functions, although Delta recruitment, selection and training is a whole other ball of wax.

So, if you're thinking about either, you need to consider whether you're more interested in a lot of trigger time, or if you're more interested in liaising with the Moroccan airborne and vaccinating Congolese villagers.

they are the same, papi.

"Rangers assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment wear the tan beret; soldiers who are Special Forces qualified and assigned to Special Forces manning positions within the US Special Operations Command wear the Green Beret. Paratroopers, soldiers who are both Airborne qualified and assigned to an active parachutist position; wear the Maroon Airborne Beret."

Berets are isolated and outnumbered whenever they see combat, Rangers are more of a quick insertion elimination team.
