Is there a way to prevent muscle spasms, and before they occur? If not, is there a way to stop them before too much muscle is damaged? It seems I have a muscle spasm, particularly in my calves, every month or two. It almost always occurs in the morning when I am beginning to wake up...and of course there is no way to stop it....I hit it, squeeze it...it runs its course no matter what I do to try and stop it. I'm usually gritting my teeth and clutching my leg by the time it stops.....it is very painful. The aftermath is having an incapacitated leg for almost a week. Someone told me to stick a needle right into the muscle....does that work? I am afraid I will tear and have an even MORE painful problem if I try that. What are my options?!?

Leg cramps....are we talking about the same thing? A cramp is more like a sore, tied-up muscle. I'm talking about a full-blown muscle-spasm....the whole muscle contracts and you have little or no control over it.

So the potassium is for what? To help rebuild muscles when you work out? I take a multi-vitamin pretty regularly.....I'll eat some extra potassium just in case.

If I were you Id ask a doc about the needle thing...Also how is your potassium level - are you eating your bananas and broccoli? Drinking enough water? When I have worked out and I think I might get one I take ibuprofin, not sure if it helps but it deacreases the pain and swelling. Ur supposed to push out your heel, hard to explain but try your best to flex the toes toward the body and extend the heel into the ground as hard as you can. When I was prego last time I had one that lasted over ten minutes I was so sweaty and crying when it ended, I almost wanted to call 911 cuz I never had one that long... Obviously it was a potassium deficiency...maybe too eat a banana when you 've worked out just as a preventive measure? Poor guy, hope it stops soon! Hope this helped :-)

That happens to me too. Try rubbing your calves from the very top of the spam and down. Then try to slowly stretch it out. Try eating more potassiam(banannas) If you're like me and you don't eat nannas, try getting some vitamins with potassium in them.

Stand up on your toes and press down on the leg having the cramps in them. Usually works for me.
