Could be normal, but if they are truly cramps rather than just the pain associated with lactic acid buildup, you might try drinking more water before you exercise. Staying well-hydrated is the best way to avoid cramping muscles.
Other possible causes include lack of potassium, lack of carbohydrate (bonking), and muscle tightness.
So...eat a meal with some potassium sources in it, drink plenty of water, and stretch a bit before you exercise!

Depends on the strength and duration of the cramps. I agree with the other comment. Potassium helps to stop cramps. Also make sure you are hydrated. As well, it is better when working out to use weights before cardio to reduce the cramping and lactic acid production.

It's good to stretch before excercising. Anytime your calves cramp, it can indicate a little bit of dehydration or a need for potassium. Bananas are good to eat and make sure you are getting plenty of water before and after excercise

It sounds weird, but drinking a little bit (bout 1/2 a cup) of pickle juice. IT WORKS ALMOST INSTANTLY. The banana's work, but more as a preventative. So if you cramp up & need relief immediately, drink the pickle juice.

Your body produces an acid when you work out called lactic acid. Your body does not have the ability to naturaly block the ability to produce this chemical and this is what causes sore muscles.

You might be low in potassium...also try and stretch before and after exercising. Try eating avocadoes, bananas, cantaloupe, cabbage, spinach, cooked mushrooms, etc.
