Since there is NO IRREFUTABLE PROOF of it whatsoever, isn’t it the stupidest thing to fool schoolkids with such a bamboozle? Is this one more reason Americans tend to do so lousy in other subjects, like geography or foreign languages?

It isn't. They're teaching Intelligent Design, now. I guess you didn't get the memo.

;-)

What can we say? Why? Because the previous generations didn't learn enough about evolution to understand it accurately, or learn their religions in such a way as to respect evidence without threat to their self-identity.

Because there is a strong anti-intellectual strain in American culture.

How's that for a "why"?

I don't blame ID or creationism for the other things, like geography, but the causes of both are the same. They aren't taught what's most needed, but spend their time achieving bogus "mastery" of trivia they don't understand or learn to use.

[edit] It's not being taught to all students, only a few, I believe.

There is no irrefutable proof for otherwise either. It can be both points of view. I don't think it should be a forced issue ,(that if they don't take the class they will either flunk or pass) but I do think they should have a choice in school. Creationism shows there is Science in Creationism. If you do not have an open mind in both ends of the stick how do you know yours is the true one. Evolution is taught it is a theory. Evolution is not irrefutable it can be refuted as well so why do they teach that. It can be said it's brainwashing too. They don't say it could have been 30 billion years ago this happened it could be said they to are brainwashing children. Think about this long and hard. I know I am probably going to touch a few cords with this one. In the same like it should be taught this way with creationism as well. That it is believed not it is. And no, not all children do bad in those subjects or any other. In fact I've spoken French 4 years in college, love geography and in all aspect s, and was valedictorian of class.

For some reason, religious people are threatened by what they see as a weakening of the christian religion, because there are more cultures, more information, and more oppinions now in America than ever before... so this is a temporary backlash, and it can not possibly last too long, we are far too intelligent and multicultural....

i guess the supreme court needs to do a better job seperating church and state, and congress needs to get the balls to strike this kind of crap down.... it's understandable though that America is back tracking a little, we are in uncertain times with a fundamentalist terrorist enemy.... but i have faith that intelligence will prevail, or at least start to in 2008

Yeah, it's a joke. As a science teacher, I'm glad I work in a district that teaches...well, SCIENCE...and recognizes the separation of church and state. If they didn't, I'd be looking for a job elsewhere!

As for the laughable comment posted a few above mine:
"Then the THEORY of evolution should not be taught either. Or, maybe both should."
Guess we shouldn't teach Einstein's theory of relativity then, eh? Or Newton's theory of gravity, or the theory that an asteroid impact caused a mass extinction roughly 65 million years ago, or anything else that qualifies as "science", huh? *LMAO* Priceless!

The opposite side of this is that there is no irrefutable proof of evolution. There is no posible way to prove either theory with out rock solid evidence. People have thier beliefs and it screws with the system. There is no perfect government and there never will be. Getting your hopes up will only set you up for dissapointment.

Because 21st century America has been developing enough archeological sophistication and scientific understanding to realize that evolution is virtually impossible to have occurred. There is more data available that I can speak of but even the "traditional" evolutionary proof has been proven a hoax.

Then the THEROY of evolution should not be taught either. Or, maybe both should.
