My husbands sibling hardy ever have anything to do with us. If they do it is usually because they want something (borrow something, need a babysitter, or it is a holiday or special occasion). He has about 8-9 nieces/nephews that we may see one time a year (Christmas). I dont know his family very well, and since they dont seem to care to see us throughout most of the year, I have no desire at all to go to the kids birthday parties. My husband doesnt care one way or the other. Are we morally obligated to go to these birthday parties?

No you are not morally obligated to go to their birthday parties. If I were you and still wanted to be on good terms with them, I would just mail a gift. Even though you are not obligated to send a gift I would do it just to not cause bad feelings in the family. Sounds like a cop out I know, but sometimes it is better to do some things like that.

P.S. If you really want to annoy the parents, get the kids loud obnoxious toys. lol

No u don't have to I have family members the same way the ONLY time we really hear from them is when it benefit them like cookouts, need money, THEY;RE birthday, and Christmas. I have a cousin who use to have the nerve to call our house on her birthday and ask " What are u gonna get me for my birthday"

I had to put a STOP to that real fast, she was just so bold with it. When I told her she will get nothing until she starts to get me or use gifts, that was 17yrs ago and she still mad at me over it( I don't care)

So unless they can come around just to hangout and no other reason other then wanting to hangout then don't go to the party.

If they ask whatsup then just kind;y tell them why, if they get mad then it's true and they never meant u any good

No . Only go to the ones that you see . But if you want to send a card and couple of dollars that would be just as good. . I understand what you mean. Seing them at Xmas then that's good the cousins can get to know each other., So don't feel bad. Good Luck Pem

The truth is that you don't have to do anything that you don't want to do, but personally, I believe that family and love are the two things that are really worth living for, and I would go for the parties becuase if that relation of yours dies, you will eventually regret not spending enough time with them. There's no harm in knowing and loving more people.

Not at all, I have a brother like that. You only see him at gift giving time. Im sure if birthdays had nothing to do with giving gifts, they wouldn't invite you at all. (the greedy bastards...lol) Send a card and spend a romantic day with your hubby instead.

If youre invited.....yes. If youre not....send a card. Its not the kids fault you dont see then that often. They are kids and it makes them feel special when people show up for their birthday.

No, no obligation at all. Send them a card and have fun at your own party instead.

well maybe you all should get to know each other.. they are probably too busy with their own stuff , and that's why it seems they only want you for something.. i would start going to these events and get to know them all, family's family,, and liefs too short for whiny little episodes.and you might have kids one day and I'm sure they would love it if all their aunties uncles and cousins came along :)
