I have some very hard and complicated and delicate issues to deal with and I want to do them right and do God's Will. I was advised to seek a spiritual director. I am Christian and I know there are some in the Catholic Church. What do you consider is a spiritual director?

Can you give me some ideas what to look for in a real Christian spiritual counselor and what to possibly expect. I am praying for directions.

A good spiritual director is like a good coach.

That person would help you work more efficiently toward perfecting your personal relationship with the almighty.

Spiritual directors, for a number of reasons, are few and far between these days. And yes, Catholics often make use of spiritual directors. The concept is loosely based on the consultive nature of the sacrament of reconciliation.

Your typical spiritual director might be someone who's almost finished their training for ministry, the deaconate, or the priesthood, or someone who decided to enter ministerial training, in order to answer that particular "call".

If appropriate seminaries, bible colleges, or divinity schools exist in your area, that might be a good place to start. Give them a call and see.

Ask around at your church, or at other churches in your vicinity. Also, ask others you know if they have ever received spiritual direction. You'll be surprised how many people have, at one time or another.

Finally, beware. People get involved in religion for a host of very different and very personal reasons. There are wackos out there, and even well balanced, well adjusted people have lots of differences of opinion when it comes to faith.

This may not be easy, so pray about it, too.

You might do better by forming a small group of like minded, close Christian friends, getting together at the same time each week for an hour or so, to pray, to study, to compare faith journeys, and to work together on charitable, or other Christian projects.

If there's more you want to share on this, drop me an email. I have a number of good contacts in the church who might be able to provide you with more specific suggestions.

There is no thing as a "spiritual director".....taking advice on christianity from any man other than the Lord in your faith is a sin, isn't it? Besides, how can you be sure the person you're speaking with isn't some corrupt, old pedophile? Of COURSE, I'm not incinuating anything about your church, I'm sure they're all fine people But the one thing many religious people, including nonchristians and christians alike, need to understand is that you have to make these decisions on your own. If you don't...well...you can't honestly say they're what god willed you to do, or allah, or jehovah, or whoever it is you follow, now can you?

Of course, if you were to convvert to Shinto, guidance isn't even neccessary at all. No matter what you do, you're bound to appease someone. ^^

A christian man goes to church, and sits
impatiently and day dreaming of fishing. A spiritual
man goes fishing, and day dreams of God. christianity runs
on guilt, fear, sin and is mind driven. Spiritualism
runs on truth, peace, and joy, and is Heart driven.
Spiritualism is a life style christianity is a learned
from a book and folk lore you're born spiritual!!!!

I have never heard the term. I have been a born again devout Christian for nearly 17 years. If you are not already catholic- stay away from them. they can not help you, but they can hurt your spiritual walk.
If you are interested in my help -you can email me-maybe I can at least point you in the right direction. I do have a degree in religion but not counseling. Maybe I can point you to the right people.
Its up to you.

this is spirituality:

Do not believe something simply because you have heard it. Do not believe anything simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not believe anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of teachers, elders, or wise men. Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all. Then accept it, and live up to it.

Are you a member of a church, and do you consider your pastor to be a man of God? Then he is the one you need to be talking to not a catholic priest. Don't go outside your Christianity and become confused.

If you want to find religion look in a church bible or oral tradition. if you want to find spirituality look within yourself.
