It depends on the type of tomato. Some tomatos are fully ripe when red, some when yellow, some when green. Ripeness is determined by the amount of a certain natural hormone released within the fruit when it's ready to drop off the stem--this hormone usually turns the fruit a color we associate with being "ripe." For the record, most tomatos that are different colors tend to be very small.

That depends on what you're talking about. There's a green looking tomato-like fruit from Mexico called a tomatillo, pronounced tohmahteeyoh. It usually has a husk on it and has a slightly sour flavor. It's ripe when it's green and the husk has begin to dry.

Green tomatoes are just that, green, unripened fruit.

(They are very hard to find, but there are a couple species of heirloom tomatoes out there that are green when ripe, adn taste like a regular ol' red tomato. But that's not the kind you're talking about, I'm sure, and certainly not the kind you slice up and fry.)

yep, but if you are frying them, use a beefmaster not any cherry or roma tomatoes. Also if you go to a latin market there are usually green tomatoes there, they have some that they use in Mexico that are grown for green comsumption.

sometimes. but there are lots of exceptions to this rule.
there are some varieties of tomatoes that never turn red, yellow orange or purple. but i have loads of recipes for green tomatoes. they are fantastic
