Usually with a ad in the life section of your local newspaper or you could just send out announcements to your family and friends, call them and tell them or have an engagement party. If it's for you Congratulations!!

You can put a formal announcement in the paper, and tell close friends and family verbally.
It is NOT a good idea to send out paper or e-mail announcements to people. There is no tradition of doing this--it's a recent development on the part of engaged women out to get attention for themselves. It'll look like you're trolling for gifts, plus everyone who recives the engagement announcement will expect to be invited to the wedding. Best to keep the specifics of your wedding plans under your hat for now, to avoid an etiquette faux pas in your future wedding planning.

Ha ha, I think most everyone here has good ideas, but for me, I would call my best friend. She would then call everyone we know and announce it for me. She's that kind of "gossip" girl. :)
Post an ad, send out a mass email, send out engagement announcement cards with a line that says something like "invitations to follow" something like that.
My friend dan invited everyone out to a big dinner to celebrate their 5 year anniversary and asked her there in front of everyone. She had no clue, so maybe inviting everyone out to dinner somewhere and announcing it then would also be a good idea.

For a formal announcement, you put an ad in the newspaper. But its always nice to call your personal friends and your family. FYI, you can't throw yourself an engagement party; its tacky. Someone else does it for you; it doesn't matter who.

Post a photo of your soon-to-be husband with that padlock and chain around his throat on the internet. Everyone will get it.
