I agree wholeheartedly--there are so many people out there who should NOT be parents not just because of the large percentage who don't know how to be good parents, but because of the (admittedly small) percentage of abusive parents. I'll refrain from a "kids today" rant because I'm about 25 years too young to go off on such a tangent, but I'm nearly positive that I wasn't such an undisciplined little hellspawn when I was little. On the issue of abuse, while true that it is a relatively rare occurrance and nearly impossible to prevent, it is a blight that needs to somehow be removed from society.

Of course, the problem would not be that people would need to be licensed; it would be the regulation of such. Either the regulation wouldn't weed out the bad parents (see the DMV) or it would be totalitarian and turn into a eugenic practice.

Of course, a news article like the one I'm linking pushes me further and further toward the opinion of forced sterility until you pass a parenting test...

Jokingly, a license seems great because god knows, there are some stupid people out there! But in reality, parenting is personal and absolutely none of the government's business. People have have had children long before all the current day advice, opinions and theories about parenting, and quite frankly, they will have children long after all the interference subsides.

I say it too, as a joke. I think if parent's had to have a license, I wouldn't be born... I don't think my boyfriend would be born either... The world would have soo many less people. I disagree. I would probably not get approved because it seems everything that's more important to me than anything, is sooo hard for me to get... or I just can't get it at all... and I would get screwed!! So no I really don't agree at all.

It would be even more control for Big Government, there is no way of stopping them from making bad decisions on who'd get to be a parent. However, people could be encouraged to attend parenting classes, so they'd know how to be good parents. A tax write off or maybe a cash payment might encourage them.

i dont agree at all. If you want to become a parent and dont think that you'll do a good of rasing your child. Take parenting classess. It will help alot. But having to get a license just to be a parent is crazy.

It has always been the belief that human life is sacred. Therefor anyone can procreate. Yet, common sense tells us a conervative 30% of people should not. I would approve of a parenting license as well as a test. Both I.Q. and "people" skills would be tested.

that's unquestionably a solid concept in concept, even nevertheless, as you mentioned, unenforceable. we'd thoroughly overload the gadget even greater advantageous than it already is with lawsuits and eliminating babies from residences the place parents dont have "licensure." the place are those babies going to circulate, and what are the top standards for this license? the place could you draw the line between somebody who ought to acquire one and somebody who ought to no longer? someplace between drug abusers, kinfolk violence subjects, or basically hassle-free lack of understanding as parents. diverse human beings would have many diverse comments concerning what constitutes solid/undesirable parenting.

I'm beginning to agree that people should not be allowed to become parents without undergoing psychological testing, and that they should have to meet certain background, employment and responsibility criteria prior to conceiving. Too many people have children without ever thinking of the awesome responsibility it entails, and it's the children who suffer for it every time.

based on the rotten parenting i got, i'd say YES! but at least require/request adults to get some parental training before screwing up a child's life.
every other thing we engage in demands some form of skill building and training so why not the most important job on earth - raising/training a child?

The way that some folks have babies when they cannot afford them, and without knowing who the fater is, perhaps that would be a good idea. Hell you have to take a test and have a license to drive a car.
