I asked this to a Korean teacher, she said it's out of love. They want the kids to succeed, and for some warped reason by beating the kids they have a sense of failure, and strive to not make the teacher angry again.

It's actually quite normal, and alot of the kids expect it to happen.
The teachers don't hit these kids out of hate, so it's doesn't cause bruising or result in the kids being hospitalised.

I have seen kids whose parents hit them, and if I were them, I would prefer to have the teacher hit me, than my own parents.
The bruising looked rather nasty.

In New Zealand, punishing kids is illegal also. I remember having a teacher who liked to humiliate us, which I think was worse than a beating.

In Korea, teachers have a very high sense of entitlement and believe they have the right to do pretty much whatever they want. Part of this is due to Korea being a Confucian society, which teaches people that teachers know everything and can do no wrong. In the past society has agreed with them, but that is starting to change. People in Korea are starting to see that the state of affairs is pretty rotten. One thing which brought this to light was the wide circulation of this video a few years ago, which shows a Korean teacher beating the crap out of one of his female students:

The teacher in the video was fired after the video came out, but if this video hadn't been made public, I doubt the school would have done anything to him.

Thats what also happens in Indonesia. My mom went to school in Indonesia and she was also a teacher there. She told me the reason is they hit there students when they have the answer to a problem wrong, when there bad, its for discipline and so that they will be good students. They hit them with rulers. And my cousin thats only 10 years old she was born in indonesia and said that if you have long nails they will cut your nails until it bleeds then they hit you a lot. but i was born in california so that never happened to me. good thing it hasnt.

They want to show that the student need to listen to them. Some teacher want to help the student get better, some just want to show that they are great.

to discipline them. but these days, the korean society is getting to be more lenient with their students. some teachers already got into trouble with the kids' parents for hitting the kids.

Because that is how they learn...and Korea is not the only place to do that...in fact everybody else does it except us here in the US...and that is one of the major reason we have one of the crappiest public school systems and things like Colombine happen.

Why do teachers in the U.S. hit on their students?

Because they can...if they could in America, they would still be doing it here too.
