Just switch to a weight loss or weight maintence cat food and follow the directions on the bag. There is probably a variety in the brand you currently buy. I would suggest starting with that one and if she doesn't like it, then try another brand. I wouldn't suggest just feeding her less of her current food because she's used to getting a certain quantity of food. If you switch to a lower-calorie variety cat food, she can get just as full but with fewer calories.
Make sure to slowly introduce her new food, maybe go extra slow if you think she might rebel. Mix a little more of the new food with the old food every day until it's all new food. If you don't go slow she'll probably turn up her nose and it might cause her some digestive problems. And make sure that you scale back on the treats and don't feed her table scraps.
Also try switching her to several small meals a day instead of one big one. That will keep her full all day and help stop her from begging for food later in the day. I think Petsmart carries an automatic feeder that you can set on a timer if you want to feed her while you are at work.
Good luck! It's hard to put a cat on a diet but in the long run she will be much healthier for it.

FIRST OFF, a regular diet, can KILL A CAT! Too much Fat passing through their liver will kill them.
So, I suggest you do the "humane" thing and get a "diet cat food" that will let them lose weight slowly. Go to a Veternerian or a Pet store like PetCo and look around. ScienceDiet is good, but you should ask someone at the pet store too if you don't find a Cat Diet Food, some of these mentioned sound excellent!
If they have their liver destroyed this way, instead of "going regular #2," they just pass blood. Very ugly to see, and painful for them.

If you really want a trim beautiful kitty with a silky coat and bright eyes you would feed him a raw meat diet.
Cats need 60-75% meat protein in their diets and you won't get that out of a bag. This is the Catkins Diet. Observe the tigers, lions, leopards etc. on the nature channels or the felines in the local zoo. They eat raw meat only, with bones for calcium and organs for vitamins.
Read up about it on the internet -- maybe "feline raw food diets"
I know you will probably settle for something from a bag so at least measure your cat's food and feed him two meals a day. No free feeding.

Feed your cat Innova Evo. It's an all natural raw diet in kibble dry form. It's preserved with Vit E. Science Diet, Iams, Eukenuba, and other premium brands are ok, but Innova Evo is a cats natural diet. You don't feed as much because of this. Since I have discovered this food, it is all I will feed my cats. Any of those "diet foods" for cats just don't work. They are chemicals and junk. Use a diet meant for your kitty, and he will be happy and healthy for years to come, and the weight will come off.

There are actually low calorie, diet cat food out there as well as dog food. I think IAMS and Pedigree makes food for the animal that is low in fat and is good for those animals that are overweight.

Iams weight control (the green bag) is what I use
And don't just keep his bowl filled all the time. Fill it once daily.
But, You have to play with your cat and get him exercise or he will just lay around all day and diet catfood is not really going to help.

Deli Cat is good and you can add green beans to the diet for a healthier cat.

there are several brands of cat food that are for indoor cats that don't get as much exercise...our cat needed less calories and we used food for indoor cats and fed less in quantity and frequency...feed only 2X a day and about 1/3 cup or less

We feed our boys regular old Whiskas, and when they started to get chunky we cut them back. We've always had them on a schedule. They used to get 1/2 cup, now they get 1/4 cup each at 7:30 AM and PM and the vet says they're textbook healthy now.

If you have a cat that has been nurtured then that will throw off her harmones and will not make her as active. Since she is bored she will want to eat more than normal. Try to not feed her as much and get her to exercise more.
