I wonder sometimes if faith based scrutiny of others is just deflection of anyone noticing the personal flaws of the perpetrator

That's what "bible based" homophobia is all about. Adulterers really get kicked around in the bible, while homosexuals get only a couple of mentions. Christians tend not to talk about that little "not commit adultery" commandment very much, because adultery hits too close to home, I suspect.

I do not hold anyone to a faith based scrutiny because I am an atheist. I have flaws - we all do and I expect others to have them but I am just looking to see if they are a good person on the overall.

well, based in Cristianity, you should not do that. That is the same thing that the saducees and pharisees did 2000 years ago. It isn't our place to judge what someone does, mostly because we have no way of knowing what their motivations are. Even the right action with the wrong motivation is wrong. I think many hide behind that shield of judging others. it makes them feel better about their own short-comings. It is important, essential in fact, to believe that humans are totally and utterly depraved creatures, not capable of any good on their own, and that the child of God is a pure clean holy person, because they have been justified.
one must not think that this is a get out of jail free card. "By no means!" says Paul. the people that do not help others resolve these flaws, and constantly do everything possible to fix their own, are in fault

No, of course not. I see friends, family, acquaintances, and I realize that they have faults. After all, when your standard (for me, Christ) is perfection, no one is going to live up to it entirely. Sometimes I try to help them see their faults and correct them so that they can be better people. But then in turn, I try very hard to accept the correction of others. Because that's just it; I can't hold up under the same scrutiny as I give others, as much as I want to. But I can do better if someone helps me and points it out to me. I think that's how we should all be - gently corrective of others, and willing to accept their correction of us in turn. Truly, if we could do that, the world would be a better place and maybe we wouldn't fail quite so often.

The only one with any right to judge me is God, and my faith allows me to hold up to His scrutiny.
