My step son thinks he's a dare devil, this damn BMX bike is gonna be the death of him...or us.
How can I get him to slow down, or be more carefull??!!
I know it's alot to ask, but he is accident prone & it's racking up the medical bills!!!!!!
We are truly going crazy over this situation.......

He is 15 yrs, old, and says "all the other kids are doing it".
Maybe he's right, but, I do not approve of the carelessness of his hobby.
Over all he's a good kid, but I feel inclined to agree this may be about attention, but, he needs to learn to go about it the right way.
I was also inclined to think we had a good stable relationship, but, I'm beginning to wonder....
Please keep the advice coming, we can use all the opinions you have to share,,,,,

How old is he? I would definitely talk with your husband, his father, and discuss limits to his BMX'ing. If he is doing this type of behavior when he is with his mother, perhaps your husband should have a discussion with her as well. Not that you would take away the bike, but perhaps an adult would need to be present when he is doing his stunts. Kids think they are invincible and nothing seriously 'bad' will occur. They are dead wrong. Take a strong stand on this issue!!! Who are the parents here, who is dictating to whom? Good Luck to you!!!

Be an adult and take control. Take the bike away until he's older and more coordinated, and if he's a teenager, then tell him that he better get a job to pay those bills, b/c you can't afford them anymore. Most kids don't get a sense of their own mortality until a) they are in their 20's, or b) someone they know gets hospitalized or killed doing this stuff. Maybe you could call up the local ambulance/rescue squad and have him take a ride.
My younger brother was the same way. Now he's 26 and still alive, only he has a lot of scars.
Best of luck to you all...

Ah, the carefreeness of childhood. The only thing that will slow him down (after hurting himself many times already), is wisdom that comes with age, it seems.

Also, you mentioned that he is your stepson. Perhaps getting injured is his way of feeling that the family (you, dad, birthmother, siblings) care. Or perhaps when he is injured is the time that he sees dad and birthmother together, it could be his way of trying to make the previous relationship work.

If the second paragraph is true, please reassure him that you (that's you, dad and birthmom) love him and that you would like him to be safe and grow up into a healthy person.

If that does not work still, do the shock treatment: take him on a tour in the Emergency Room or morgue. He will get over the initial shock but the lesson learned from that will be well remembered.

Parenting is a challenge, good luck.

obviously he is not going to slow down so take it away from him for 2 weeks and see how he does then give it back if he continues his self-destructing behavior take it away for good till mentally he can handle it, there is a difference being a BMX rider and evil kenivel

I will give you a classic. Casually when he sits down to a meal or sits down at all, ATTACK! Throw that blanket over him, tie him up and give him that speach or that video of him in the hospitle util he swears he wont do it anymore. Good luck.

Show him some pictures of people in full body casts and tell him that will happen to him if he keeps doing all those crazy stunts.
