The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus. Acquired Immune Definiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the collection of symptoms/disease caused by the HIV virus.
You can be HIV positive, meaning you have the virus in your body, but not have AIDS. You receive that diagnosis when and if the virus causes your immune system to break down to the point that you are susceptible to opportunistic infections.

HIV means human immunovirus, the little creature that causes AIDS. If someone is HIV positive, it means that they have been infected with the virus. AIDS refers to a complicated set of symptoms that people get when the virus has invaded their body and destroyed their immune system. Some of the signs of AIDS are a kind of mental disorder called AIDS dementia, and opportunistic infections (infections that people get only if their bodies are very week) like thrush (an infection in the throat) and Kaposi's sarcoma (the skin blotches you see on Tom Hanks in the movie Philadephia). Today, with the triple cocktail of medications, not everyone who is HIV positive will get AIDS.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus (a virus that replicates DNA) which causes the illness AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV is the virus but AIDS is the actual disease. HIV in a way is the carrier. that doesn't mean that you won't get AIDS though
