I am a Scotsman. born in Glasgow and educated in Edinburgh.
I have no grudge against the English. This is all stupidity. Those
who mention "Braveheart" with Mel Gibson should realize that
this is a Hollywood production who have the tendency to overdo
history for box-office reasons. We all know that the Royal family
are rooted both to the Stewart family as with the Tudor Family. The Royal family, have both Tudor and Stewart blood and if they
decide to call themselves as Tudor or Stewart makes no
difference - we are one at present and must keep it as
such. In the recent past English and Scots fought side by side
and that is how we feel. So my friend, go over the border and
you will be very welcome, this I can assure you. Both England
and Scotland have experienced each other‘s Royality so forget
Hollywood! We are but one. Scottish or English pride is natural
as it should be. This is not aggression, it is normal. So, please
accept a Scottish welcome even if I no longer live there - but
would like to move back. Finally, the Scots are known for an
"open door" for those in need, and not only at Hogmanay!
Cheers to you my friend - Iain Ritchie (which is my true name)

It is a generalisation to say that one race hates another... and therefore is not the truth.

However, our two countries do have a loooong (and rather bloody) history... a war that began hundreds of years ago and has never quite finished.

And then the country became a province - ruled from afar (London). Bit similar to some of the problems in Northern Ireland. The Welsh and the Cornish - and Yorkshire folk would probably say similar things if really pressed.

No The English Parliament is finally giving some power back to Scotland.... but not much. And saying - "We think you can now have this 'regional Parliament' means that it is, in essence, still a 'Region' rather than a country in English law.

Not too empowering, really.

But Scotland has always had stronger ties (and allegiances) to France (hence all of those 'bumper stickers' that have the Scottish flag and the word 'Ecosse' - the French word for Scotland). And you could ask why the English hate the French.... same kinda thing. So the Scots show their contempt for English as a language and a culture by having a car sticker with their country's name in French.

Ah. Don't you just love people and their politicking!. What a strange bunch of idiosyncratic monkeys we are.

Well, I imagine that not all Scots hate english, but as far as I know , it is my understanding that in the middle age, around the XIII century, the english king Edward conquered Scotland. The Scots didn't like that, obviously, but the Scots finally defeated the english and expelled them out of Scotland.
There was a time of uncertain peace for centuries, but you know, the english wanted to rule over all the British Islands, but the Scots wanted to keep their independence.
Finally, after the death of elizabeth I, James, son of Mary Stuart was named king of england and at last england and Scotland united without force, under a Scottish king ( ironic, no ? ) at the beginning of the XVII century.
Both kingdoms have stayed united until now, but I heard that now there is a movement in Scotland that wishes the separation from england and that was the motive for the making of "Brave Heart"
Some years ago, a group of Scottish youngsters stole the scone stone on which the Scottish kings were crowned, ( the stone is now in the crowning hall in London ) as a protest for the union of england and Scotland.
As bottom line, I understand that Scots are fiercely independent and not all of them are happy with the union to england

Its a historical thing, since the Romans were here there has been defences against the Scottish (Celts), then when we (English) weren't getting bullied by another country (read the Romans) we decided to give them some, and its been hammer and tong ever since. Basically the British (us) occupy Scotland and have forced our will upon them for centuries now. How would you feel??. Look at the native Americans, they're not very happy with their immigrant rulers are they?

It's not just the Scottish, the Welsh aren't much fonder, I think it is routed in times of William Wallace where England wanted to make the whole land a single kingdom.

Interestingly, before the Romans arrived, all of Britain was Celt, Celts used to fight naked and painted blue like in Brave heart, rumour has it that the Celts retreated into the hills of Wales and Scotland, but as they didn't keep written records, we'll never know for sure.

The English tried to take over Scotland. They took the Scottish king off the throne and put somebody else on there. They treated the highland Scots like dirt.....outright killed many of them....many others were imprisoned for imaginary crimes.....some were sent over to the colonies as indentured servants.

The Scots have plenty of reason to hate the English.

i am an Irish man and in Ireland there is also strong resentment for the English this is because the english conquered land they had no right to take and caused great damage to the people there braveheart is a watered down version of this for example in drogheda near Dublin when Cromwell was invading Ireland he commanded his soldiers to use Irish babies as shields against Irish bullets also when men who were wrongly imprisoned were starving themselves in the 1970s for prisoner of war status British soldiers beat them, tortured them through Russian roulette, sleep deprivation even rape the Irish and Scottish share this hatred for the English for having ravaged our countries so heartlessly these things are in the past however and would be forgotten if the British would relinquish control over northern Ireland, land which nobody can say the english have any right to

Hating the English seems to be the pastime of half the world, I shouldn't worry. I was born in Scotland and live in England so I just sit this one out on the fence. Both countries have wonderful aspects, and of course no one should go round hating anyone else.

The scottish and english were combating for years. England took over scottland and did undesirable issues to the persons. Slavery(sex) Used their troops deliberately in battles that were one sided adversarial to the english. See BraveHeart

It's not so much the actual English people whom the Scots (and Welsh too) hate, but rather the arrogant, "holier-than-thou" attitude which a lot of English people seem to have towards people in other parts of the UK.
Also, there are a lot of people in England who cannot distinguish between Britain and England.
