let him help you make the decisions...it's his room and he should have a say in how it is decorated.

I agree with you. Obviously at 14 years old, he will have an opportunity to participate in making his room his own. Have him chose a bright color for painting the walls. At that age, a lot of teens enjoy also painting their ceiling (if it's ok with you, mom) and putting glow-in-the dark or other designs on it. Posters are probably the best way to go, as I'm sure he can find a lot of tour posters, photographs, and even record covers from the bands he likes. Carpet may be expensive to replace, but you definitely need something adaptable to future redecoration and also teenage boy traffic. To give him more space in his room, you might considering getting a lofted bed like is popular for tiny college dorm rooms. I had one in my own room growing up, and I put my desk under it. I saw a recommendation for ikea in one of the other posts, and I know they have a kit for one. If you are more capable than I, you and he may be able to assemble a loft to raise his bed. If you keep the bed on the floor, you can make an inexpensive platform bed by laying three interior doors side to side on the floor, then layering his box springs and matress on top. Then purchase or make some variety of interesting bedspread/comforter. If you don't already have an area set aside in the house, he might appreciate having a corner of the room designated for his guitar and associated equipment. Hope this is useful to you. Enjoy the process with your son!

Paint the room a really cool color, like deep red or green - let him choose. Then he can hang some cool posters. Also, a new bedspread always helps. This is a good time to maybe upgrade him to a bigger bed (double or queen) since he will probably be growing a lot. Consider purchasing some new storage space or a desk from www.ikea.com - these purchases are affordable and will last for a long time, and will be durable enough for him to take to college.

OH WOW.. I thought it said that your son needs a facelift.. I was going to saw.. wow..
lol sorry
I would paint each wall a different color, colors that contrast each other. Pick his favorite colors and have some fun with it. Maybe even stripes on one wall with two or more colors. Have your son choose, make a family project out of it.

Paint three walls white, and the fourth a very rich red. He'll like it now because it's so extreme and unusual, and when he gets older and/or moves out, there are other interesting things you can do with those colors-- an asian-inspired theme with lots of red, black, and white could be very fresh.

Ask him to go to paint store with you..let him pick the colors. Have him invite his friends over in old clothes, and let them loose!!!! Be sure to plastic the floor. the get online and search for posters...saw one site called Wolfgang's vault. Go to local mall and see if there is a spencer's store or go to online , they have all kinds of great lighting .. it will eventually look like a musty dank night club where all those great bands made their starts!!!1

Why not decorate with posters, flags, memorabilia from his favorite rock bands?
You could paint the walls a neutral color (he would probably love black!!) and add posters and things as you acquire them.
You could try flea markets, swap meets, etc.
Should be a lot of fun, and you could spend time together doing it!!
