My cat died suddenly on Thursday night and I don't know what could have happened. I came home from a bar, having alcohol poisoning from a strawberry drink (I am allergic to berries). My husband laid me on one side of the couch while he sat on the other side. Several times he pet our cat Rapunzel, and then he went upstairs to sleep, leaving me passed out on the couch. I awoke in the middle of the night and went upstairs as well. When we woke the next morning we found Rapunzel on my side of the couch, dead. She was on her back, and solid--no blood, nothing. I am scared that I might have suffocated the cat--but she has slept with me for years and is very skittish--wouldn't she have moved or tried to struggle? I am bewildered and racked with guilt!

She slept with me every night on the couch (for years!) and is used to my movements--and there were no signs of struggle on me or the couch. She was laying on her back when we found her, which she never does. Besides, I went upstairs halfway through the night and got in my own bed. Is it possible she died of something else?

Cats do die suddenly of heart attacks when no heart problems have been detected.

Please do not feel guilty. As you say no healthy, active cat would let itself be smothered.

Maybe having a vet do a necropsy would solve the puzzle for you. I am sorry for the loss of your cat. I know how painful the experience can be.

Sad to say, you might have sufficated the cat, jsut because if you were drunk and passed out, no matter how much the cat put up a struggle, you woudn't have knoow. Even if the cat scratched you, you wouldn't have woken up to get off of her. I'm sorry this happened. Next time, no mixed drinks. Know your drinking limit, or don't drink at all.

sometimes cats just die, they are old or sick or something just didn't agree with them. If you crushed the cat it probably would have tried to move but you were passed out and might not have been able to move. It probably died sometime during the night and was not your fault, sorry for your loss but I'm not sure there was anything you could do.

You don't say how old your cat was. But you didn't suffocate it. She would have clawed you to make you move. She was solid feeling because rigor mortise had set in. And if you are allergic to berries, then why did you have a strawberry drink?
