If your Regal is a RWD then yes, you can. Look for a Chevy Donor car and strip the parts from it.

Of course, anything can be doen with a torch and a welder.

Yes, it can be done. Most mid-size GM rear wheel drive cars all used the same metric chassis. From 1978 to about 1988 Monte Carlos, Regals, Cutlasses, and Grand Prixs all use the same suspension, frame, and basic drivetrain. You might notice all those holes in the frame around the engine mounts in your car. That's for all the different style of engines that can go in different brands of cars. Being from 1986 means it probably has an on board computer. This won't work with the new engine. Depending on where you live, you might not need it anyway. It's not real hard, just time consuming if you don't have lots of tools. The exhaust may be your biggest hurdle. You may have to rewire the ignition system a little, but you might get lucky and everything will work as is. I'd say if you use as many chevy parts as possible, this can be almost a bolt-in project.

The '86 Regal is the same basic platform as a Monte Carlo, so that would be an easy swap.

Why not find a Regal Grand national or Regal T-Type engine, which is a turbocharged 3.8 that performs really well, and would be a lot less headaches to install.

Yes you can put a chevy drive train in that car in fact it uses the same frame as the monte carlo you will have to change the motor mounts, power steering brackets, and other small stuff like that most of it will be bolt in since GM likes to drill lots of holes. The hardest part will be determining which holes in the frame to use for the motor mounts.

It will fit right in. You will have to get a v8 radiatior, engine mounts, and possibly a transmission crossmember. But the engine will go right in. The easiest thing to do would be to rob a junk v8 mid 80's Regal, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, or Cutlass (all the same body) and swap all the v8 parts over.
