That is, to avoid someone walking towards you?

Yes! It might not be entirely truthful, but it's less rude than outright ignoring them, and is less likely to make them feel bad. I'll especially do this if I have somewhere to be and just don't have the time to stop and chat! That way I can wave and smile, but I don't have to take any time to stop.

Ya know, I am on the phone dealing with business a lot so I do not need to fake it and if I did I would make a call for real. Just me, but a thought for those of you who do this and then get a real call...

"I was in the middle of that story and did not know it dropped! What did you hear me say last?"

Then you look like you were talking and are picking up where you left off. When you get past that person you can explain what you just did to your friend.

I do it all the time; I even call voicemail and listen to old messages and pretend like I just received some very, very important new ones. I frown and start scribbling them down on a notepad for further excuse not to have to make eye contact with whomever I am trying to avoid.

Hell yeah. All the time just to freak people out.

When I'm shopping by myself I'll make my phone ring when no ones looking and pretend to answer it and just say random stuff to get people to look at me. Sometimes they take their children by the hand and lead them away.

'Hey how ya doing? Yeah I went to practices today. But damn they had me go against (My friend's name, who is a professional wrestler) And he friken busted his head open! I accidentally knocked him over the top rope and we had to call 911."

Or

"I gotta go man. I gotta find a bathroom. I gotta take a huge dump!" Sometimes if I say it loud enough I get a few people around me laughing but most of the time they just walk away quickly.

I love doing it. i don't like people that much so they mostly leave me alone.

Not only do I do this, I often put an earphone to my ear, with the wire sticking into my pocket and rock out in public places (metro, etc...) Catch is I don't own a music player.
Great conversation starter though, when asked what you're listening to you can suit it to the asker.

No because it takes more energy to be rude and avoid someone then to politely smile, nod and briskly walk away.

A cop was following me home after I left a bar, had a couple too many. I know he saw me swerve so I covered it by hitting a button on the phone to make it light up then held it to my ear. Dunno for sure that's why he left me alone, but THANK GOD he did.
