Well, we did tell Israel that no US ships were within 100 miles of that location.
Would it have been reasonable for Israel to assume that we knew the location of our own ships?

June 6, 1976..during the 6 day war the USS Liberty intelligence is in international waters of the Gaza strip...US flags and markings clearly displayed. The day was clear and Israeli recon planes had been flying over head for hours.
Without warning 2 unmarked Israeli aircraft attacked the USS Liberty. The Liberty radioed the US warship (including 2 aircraft under RADM Geis) for protection...those US war ships were there expressly to provide protection to the USS Liberty and respond with force and and destroy any attackers.
Democratic President Johnson as his SECDEF Robert McNamara ordered the places back to the Carrier's. Without air cover the USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats which launched 5 torpedo's. One hit the Liberty killing 25 American sailors and injuring 172 others! The Israeli torpedo boats came with in 50 feet of the US ship, claimed they never say our flag(s) or saw
USS LIBERTY on the stern....right. So they shot our sailors that were exposed on the deck. At the end of the day thanks to President Johnson and our alleged allies the final tally; 34 US dead and 172 US injured. All US Naval personnel were ordered not to discuss the issue and threatened with court martial if they did.
ZERO Israelis dead, injured, arrested, court martiled or even questioned by the US as to what happened.
Over 30 years later there has still never been a Congressional investigation into this event and Isreal has never been charged or investigated.
Why?

I'm sure it was quite deliberate - and that the Liberty entered an area or emitted data that it was told not to by a warring party or parties and got hit on purpose.
It could still have been a specific error by a few pilots, but in the middle of a battle you don't enter a free-fire zone. Remember, we still today have blue-on-blue incidents.
As an American Jew I deplored the attack, and hoped Israel had some excuse, but I think they just got too eager, and I don't - and didn't then - support their decision.

It really centers around the Liberty's mission. If you think about it, in the late 60's Israel working with S. Africa had tested at least 2 nuclear devices.
