20 yr old male here, 5'9, 190lbs. i started going to the gym recently almost every day of the week (about 6). i drastically cut my caloric intake, im only eating about 600 calories a day (yes, i know how unhealthy this is). Supposedly eating that little amount of calories a day slows down your body's metabolic rate and forces it to retain calories. however, ive been taking multivitamins to boost my metabolism in combination with half an hour cardivascular and some strength resistance workouts. i know its not the healthiest approach but (no bull) will it work to loose weight or am i wasting my time ?

HOLD ON DUDE - that is not only unhealthy, it is going to completely back-fire. You caloric intake is so low that your body is going to be tearing apart muscle for energy and to support vital life functions.

If you lose muscle, your percent body fat may actually increase - even though your body weight is lighter. You have to stop looking at the scale and start being concerned with your PERCENT BODY FAT.

If you lose muscle you will end up putting on more fat when you stop starving yourself. You will also be in worse health. In the future you will find it even more difficult to lose fat.

HERE ARE THE BASICS:

1. you lose weight by consuming fewer Calories than you burn
2. you gain weight by consuming more Calories than you burn.
3. you should be concerned with losing FAT, not weight. There are 3500 Calories/Lbs of fat. To lost one pound of fat/week you have to burn 3500 Calories/week more than you consumed. there are 2500 Calories in a pound of muscle.
4. You should be more concerned with your percent body fat, not your weight.
5. the best, most effective way or burning fat is by combining weight-training and cardio exercise. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be. You will burn more calories all day long, including while you sleep. A health body fat percentage for males is 7-18%, females 18-24% (approximate numbers).
6. you should eat 6-8 small meals each day - this will prevent you from eating 3 large meal which will slow your metabolism while your body works to digest the large quantity of food.

As a general rule of thumb, you should be weight-training 3-4 times per week and performing cardio 3-5 times per week.

Consider hiring a personal trainer (ISSA certified) and a nutritionist. The money spent on these services is worth more than spending money on pills and potions.

TO DETERMINE YOU CALORIC REQUIREMENTS
your body weight and percent body fat is needed. with that info, it is easy to set up a diet that will allow you to lose 2 or more pounds of fat each week WHILE MAINTAINING OR EVEN GAINING MUSCLE.

Even if you manage to lose weight that way, you will gain it back - and more - the moment you stop taking the pills or stop exercising so much or eat just a tiny bit more.

Not only that, but even with the pills/multivitamins/whatever they are, you are permanately affecting your metabolism. Which means you are not only wasting your time, you are making it harder for you to lose weight the healthy way!

Going under say.. 1000 cals a day will put your body in starvation mode. It doesn't understand what your trying to do, it's trying to save it's self.

You will lose wt but not the best way to go.I dropped 30 lbs in about 2 months with little exercise and dropping my cals to 1200 a day.
