It sounds as though the problem lies with your sound card driver. Since you didn't include the name of the maker of your soundcard, it's a bit difficult for me to advise you which manufacturer's website to go to for the download. So, first things first....let's find out what the manufacturer is of your sound card:
1. Right click on "My Computer"
2. From the resulting menu, click on Properties
3. From that window, click on the tab that says "Hardware", and then click on the box that says "Device Manager".
4. Scroll down until you see an entry with a + sign next to the entry "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers", and click on that + sign.
5. Of the resulting devices displayed, look for a brand name, such as "Soundblaster", "Creative", or whatever.
Once you've determined what the manufacturer and model of the sound care is, you can then go to their website and download the appropriate set of drivers for that card, and then install the driver. Hope this helps.
