Is it typical for preschools/daycares to require the child's and both parents' social sec. #s on their apps? I inquired about it and they said it's for collection agencies reference if payment is ever uncollectable thru the school. I offered to pay a deposit but they said it's school policy. Sounds unnecessary and a bit worrisome. What your experience with this matter? Thanks for any input.

Get used to it. ALL the schools going forward will ask for the information. Despite the warning on the card saying "not for indentification purposes" pretty much every entity uses it instead of creating their own numbering system.

The good news, you DO NOT have to give it to them. Legally the only time you have to give ANYONE your ss# is if it is potentially tax related, like an employer, bank or securities account. You do not have to give it to get credit either, just be aware that if you don't the creditor doesn't have to approve you. You also do not need to give it to doctors or insurance companies (except governmental aid).

I do not put social security numbers on the kids' records any longer, nor do I give it to doctors. Our constitutional right to privacy is rapidly disappearing, if not already gone thanks to the Patriot Act and other acts of this administration.

Do expect the school to be all prissy and up in arms over it, but frankly, with identity theft on the rise, I would NOT give it to anyone that is not legally entitled and the school is not.

Besides, why would you want to assist any collection agencies that would want to haunt you? That's about the worst reason to give it out..yikes!

Stand by your guns.

I have never encountered this. And typically if a place owning the same status as a daycare asks for it it usually says optional. I wouldnt give it to them...policy or not...send your child elsewhere.

It is normally apart of the funding process.
Also a safe guard for you that your paying for
your child and not someone elses.
A easy way to keep track of your data, since
social security is used for reference purposes.
Hope this helps.

So they are going to go after your PRESCHOOLER if you and your husband don't pay?? That has to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard of. I can understand both yours and your husbands, but the childs???? God, my Red Flag just went up, smells funny, be careful -- maybe look at a different shcool.

I don't like it but it is typical in these types of business. One method of you avoiding giving them your SSN would be to see if you can set-up direct deposit with them.... sometimes this works.

In addition to my answer and in response for the people who say it's illegal or to withhold the info, I believe it's actually part of the Patriot Act now... I could be wrong but that doesn't happen to often (LOL)

I would refuse. Usually you can refuse to put SSN on forms. It just isn't necessary. You have to realize that any person who works at that facility then has access to all the information they need to steal your identity. I just don't trust people that much.

I'd tell them no way. If they push it then tell them you'll consult a lawyer.

I think it is typical nowadays, especially for daycare centers (not daycare at someone's house). We had to put our info on the form when we enrolled our daughter in daycare last year.

I would check with the SS office near you. I have been told that places cannot require you to give them your SS numbers due to identity theft problems.
