From personal experience, the volkswagen was my first car "71", because it's so old, you will have to put so much money into, like the bushings, the molding, rust, rubber seals, engine work, possibly carbs, oil pan.. etc.. so what i would do, is go to a junk yard, and rebuild it from the bottom up. get a nice frame that is straight not too much rust, or none at all.. and go from the bottom up.. You can find one on the side of someone house, or junk yard.. for about $0 to 100 dollars.. they don't want it.. You can use the extra money to that you would spend on one that look okay, but you will spend so much money when it breaks down or fall apart.. So definiteley buy it stripped.. You can find all they parts at these volkswagen store, or online parts store..

I'll have to 2nd the answer that the thesamba.com is most likely going to be your best bet. As well don't forget ebay, you can find some great deals on there just make sure you look the car over before you bid. As well there's still tons of shows going on and I've yet to see a show where their wasn't atleast one car for sale and as well gives you a chance to talk to people that may know where there's one for sale.

They were still produced in Mexico (the older body style like Herbie) until a couple of years ago. I bet you can find a lot down there.
