Mexico is both luck and unluck from being neighbors with the richest country in the world. It gets a lot of great trade opportunities that the rest of Latin America doesn't have (Mexico is the richest country in Latin America by total GDP and per capita GDP, so most Latin American countries are jelous and hold a grudge). Unfortunately, this means Mexico ignored trade from elsewhere in the world, to this day its economy is set up to cater to the needs of the US, although Fox has made things much better in this area. There's a saying in Mexico that "when the US catches a cold, Mexico gets the flu". Basically, all of Mexico's economic eggs are in the same basket.

Also, for 71 years the same corrupt political party controlled Mexico (for reference, it was the liberal political party) and made a lot of bad economic moves (like it's petroleum policies, which alone could make Mexico a powerful 1st world nation if reformed). Mexicans didn't neccessarily like this liberal party and how it was running the country, but feared if the wrong people got in they'd make it worse. The common people weren't rich, but they certainly weren't and aren't poor (they weren't starving). So this "rebellion" many people here say they should have didn't/doesn't make much sense, as history would tell us (think french revolution or russian revolution).

When Vicente Fox (conservative party) was elected he made a lot of promises, many of which never really materialized, but it's not really his fault since most of the old guard (liberal party) did everything they could to make him look bad (sounds no different than US politics, but Mexico's the corrupt country, right?). He's done a lot of great things for Mexico, like curb corruption and make the enforce the right of freedome of speech. Change is happening, Felipe Calderon (also conservative party) shows a lot of promise.

All in all, Mexico has it's problems, but it also gets a really bad rap in the US. It's has the best economy in Latin America, in terms of total GDP, GDP per capita, and currency stability. Mexico is the 16th largest economy in the world. It's just tough to look good when your neighbor is the richest, most dominating country in the world. Latin American countries look at Mexico the same way, most of the world looks at us... rich, dominating, taking over others cultures, capitalistic, greedy... etc.

Like it or not, Mexico is like our uncoordinated little brother that copies everything we do, just not quite as well.

there is a long deep history of corruption in Mexico. You have a very elite upper class, no middle class, and the poor they push off all they can on the US. Until people stay there and force changes, things will just conitinue to devolve.

Their export of their illeglas is #1 or 2 on the list of cash for the country. Pretty sad state of affairs.

Hey Gokart121. Was your mother rapped by a Mexican guy???

It seems you´ve got a big issue against Mexicans.

NM505 I could not have said it better. You've got a great knowledge about Mexico and Mexican politics, congratulations friend. You are one of those guys who make us believe that not all the people from the US are stupid and egocentrics.

Shame on the other guys who speak about a subject without any real knowledge about what they are speaking.

Because Mexico is corrupt and Fox is one step down from a dictator. The new President will be just as bad. We get stuck with all their poor citizens.

GoKart, I think you ARE a Mexican, or better said, a German Mexican-American. There's people here who hate their Mexican "side." You are repeating yourself again.
