I have started giving blood and am now on the organ donor register. How can I do more to help people or the environment?

Pick an area or an issue you believe in. Look in your phone book, or search the web for groups you can help. Join them. Keep an eye out and an ear open when you follow news, for groups doing work you believe in.

Go to blogs (web logs) that say things that you like said. Follow links they have (many have ads from non-profits on them).

Here are three groups I support:

http://www.amnesty.org/ an international human rights group that works to end all torture and eliminate the death penalty. You can join them to keep up with human rights issues and write letters and sign petitions in support of prisoners of conscience

http://www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/home UNHCR is the UN group that helps war refugees

http://www.nrdc.org/ Natural Resources Defense Council works to protect the environment.

There are a lot of groups of people doing worthwhile things. Pick one, and jump in.

plant a garden and donate the produce to homeless shelters. 2.00 buys enough green bean seeds to produce over a pound of beans a day all summer. plant a tree. dont run your air conditioner. all an air conditioner does is blow the heat from the air to the outside of your house. that may not seem like much, but a whole city full of AC units puts off a lot of heat.
take a hunter safety course, own a gun, and know how to use it. join a hunting/outdoors club. the hunters and hikers do more to keep our wild areas wild than all the city slicker yuppies in every granola club combined.

Volunteer for your local Sierra Club. If you don't have one check it out on the Internet.

There are groups that do clean ups by local rivers and streams. This usually happens in the spring. You can watch your local paper for those.

Check out other organizations like Nature Conservancy and The National Parks Association. All of these groups work on preserving the environment- especially in the U.S.

Well, consider volunteering at your local library to encourage literacy. Or check an elementary school. Most schools are in need of some time for planning lessons ect. Collect toys for the Salvation Army or pick up litter on the street as you pass by. Just be creative and use your interests.

Smile more, commit small random acts of kindness, try to be patient and show those you love that you do love them. Your willingness to give is as good as giving.
