Les Gaulois were a positive influence on France, and helped to define its national identity rather than being swallowed up by Rome. Verçingetorix is France's first national hero, and his beloved satirical double Astérix has become a beloved comic hero.

It was an essential part of French history that the Gauls were able to hold so well onto their stubborn idea of opposing Roman imperialism. This would set France up to be one of the two nation-states of identity in a way that only England could also achieve concurrently during that point of history, and only due to the fact that England was geographically isolated. This made it easier for England to have a national identity, but France's rebellious and strongly independent native cultures would assert the formations of a strong nation.
