If you are in doubt, call your Vet or Animal Poison Control: 1-800-548-2423

It's the chemical theobromine in chocolate that's poisonous to dogs. Different chocolate types have different concentrations of theobromine.

If we use the below table as a guide, for your 24 lb dog the approx. toxic dose of milk chocolate is 24oz or 1.5 lbs. Assuming your pack of chololate doesn't weigh 6lbs your dog should be fine :)

Toxic dosage for 50lb dog:

Milk chocolate - 50 oz
Semisweet chocolate - 15 oz
Baking chocolate - 5 oz

For other weight, just divide the dosages by 50 and multiply by your dogs' weight.

Hi there. I'm a Vet Tech.
Here are some facts for you. We see this a lot, as you can imagine, in our chocolate loving society.
Chocolate is poison in large amounts. A Vet told me that one ounce of chocolate per 1 pound of dog is dangerous. That is dark chocolate. Milk chocolate is diluted with milk and other things which makes it less dangerous.
That means your 24 pound dog can eat 24 ounces of chocolate before you need to start being worried. That's almost 2 pounds! You see what I'm saying. What are the odds that he will even be able to eat 2 pounds of anything, much less chocolate.
Even if he did, usually the first thing that happens is the dog vomits it all back up. They do themselves a favor that way I guess.
Don't worry. It seems that most dogs don't react at all anyway. Chocolate poisoning is RARE.

lLindy has an excellent response.

Yes they can die from eating Chocolate. It is a combination of how much chocolate they ate, the size of the dog, their degree of allergic reaction (it is different for different dogs), and how much they have eaten in the past (for some dogs it can have a cumulative affect).

It is always best to at least call your vet.

Hi,

Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.
more info on chocolate and dogs:

Chocolate contains theobromine (a compound similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. Baking chocolate contains more theobromine per ounce than semisweet chocolate, which, in turn, contains more theobromine than milk chocolate. While most lethal cases of chocolate poisoning occur when small dogs eat large quantities of baking chocolate, no variety of chocolate is good for a dog.

When ingested by dogs, chocolate causes release of epinephrine (adrenaline) which causes the heart to race and serious cardiac arrhythmias to develop. Might not hurt to call the vet. Be sure to tell your vet what type of chocolate your dog ate, how much you think she ate, how long ago she indulged herself, and how much your dog weighs.

Signs of toxicity to watch for are:

anxiety, pacing, hyperexcitability, restlessness, excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, or seizures

I don't think he will die from eating such a small amount. A friends dog ate a whole bag of chocolate and was fine. I think it just messes up the dogs stomach for a bit.

I have a thirteen year old golden retriever and recently he ate a small chocolate bar during Halloween 2011. I took him to the animal hospital to ask the doctor if it would hurt him. He told men's small bit will give a dog bad diarrhea but a large amount could cause something fatal. I don't know if that's true but my dog was crapping bad for a week.

Well, take a rule of moderation. I have heard that chocolate is poisonous for dogs. But that's probably when you give them too much--like half a birthday cake or something to the like. But my dog used to eat a small piece and nothing happened.

He can eat it, but not all the time or too much.

Dogs can die from eating chocolate. Its my understanding that they cannot properly digest something in the chocolate, but I'm not absolutely certain this is the reason. Milk type is the least risky however. I don't think your dog is at risk, but a call to the vet wouldn't hurt if you notice anything wrong
