I like hanging out on our back deck, but when it gets a bit darker out, I get freaked out when the bats start flying by. We have 2 of them that like to zip around in our backyard, and sometimes they have flown by a little TOO close.

No most bats in the US that live in and around populated areas eat primarily insects and occasionally small rodents. They are highly beneficial to have around.
They can be a little scary since there are so many legends surrounding them but not to worry.

Bats can not see very well. They were attracted by the noise and light. So do not make any sounds when your out there.Thats how they find there prey.Buy a cheap kids toy that makes sounds(Even a small battery operated radio) and put it in your yard at night away from the deck. They will go for that.Good Luck!

No. They are harmless. They are just flying around eating insects and bugs that are flying around.
