Short of putting my trash in the pantry ( only place I have to put it away) I cannot seem to keep my rat terrier out of the trash unless we are physically at home. I know she just misses us and above that, does not seem to like her dog food, but something has got to give... and it will not be me

It's not the dog, it's you. Someone has to be smarter! Get a trash can with a locking lid on it,or put it where you have to open a door to get to it.

Try feeding her some Nature's Recipe organic food, your probably feeding her some commercial dog food that she doesn't like, why don't you try eating it yourself!

I'm a woman, to keep my dogs out of my monthly trash, I got the squat, foot pedal, metal can. (think Walmart) My dogs don't try to knock the can over like a challenge, but that does seems to keep them from messing with my trash.
For a kitchen can, A taller one might work. (I saw a neat $60 touch-less one from Sams club though I don't know how sturdy it is from a dog.) My kitchen one, they have tried, but only succeed if I had smelly meat near the top and too tempting. For that, the bag goes outside (or where ever) until trash day.
As for her loneliness, perhaps a comforting soft squeaky toy that she's picked out.. and that you've played with together (and perhaps you've slept with (when new)).. So she has something to snuggle with that has your scent, for when she's alone. Good luck.

Two tips.
Move trash can into the pantry. That is where mine is inconvient for me but dog proof.
Mouse trap. Get the old fashin metal and wooden mouse trap and set it and plce it on top of the trash and let your pet correct itself.
They make a dog safe mouse trap that has a large flapper on it that can not hurt the dog but I just use the plain ones.
Now my dog see one and they will leave anything in the area alone. I do not even set them any more just put it out.

Every night around 9pm (when we are home) if no one plays w/ my pup, (papillon), he goes to each trash can in the house & knocks it over. He especially likes to be very noisy and knock over metal ones & watch our reaction.
We bought a wicker type trash can (for kitchen) and stuck it snugly between the stove & countertop area (so he has trouble knocking it over).
He will still jump on it and bark at it if he's lonely, but at least we don't have food everywhere & him eating something that may be dangerous.
He just wants attention, attention, attention. Only smothering him w/ attention will do it.

My Pomeranian was very bad about getting into the trash and she knew better because she never did it if I was home. So I put a tasty piece of meat at the top of the trash can, covered it with ground cayenne pepper and left. I came home; the trash was spilled. She never did it again!!!

Try ammonia .Get a plastic spray bottle and put the ammonia in the bottle and mist the garbage with the ammonia . It's worth a try. As far as the food switch brands . Or try mixing dry food with can food . Good Luck !

you need to calmly block her away from it & stay in front of it keeping her from making contact with it...in dog, this means you are dominate & are claiming the trash can...any move she makes toward the trash can, you need to correct her with a tap on the neck.....watch "The Dog Whisperer" it will explain this & a whole lot more about teaching your dog to behave...look it up on the web....you will be amazed!!!

They are kind of expensive, but buy the tall stainless steel kitchen garbage can that has the pop up lid on it. Your doggie will not be able to get it open, and it also looks very nice in the kitchen!

get a bin that fits under the sink or one that can't be tipped over or even get one with a flat top and put a child lock on it so the pup can't get into it.
